inhouse? i've always heard it was a -chevy- motor. despite being 60*
and not 90, it has the same 4.4" bore spacing as the sbc; rods are the
same 5.7"...

all of which doesn't prevent buick engineers from using chevy parts
and tooling, but the only thing i see linking them is that it's a v6.
iirc gm performance refers to it as a chevy too.

i'm wondering if the newer 3.5/3.6/3.8/3.9 are actually 2.8/3.1/3.4
derivatives also.

and speaking of the 292, i've heard of someone trying derivative 3.4
twin-dual-cam heads, cut and welded together, on a chevy-six-derivative
pontiac ohc. they said the head bolts even lined up.

given the lead time to develop and tool up the 4.0, it must've been
under way long before mopar stepped in. if it hadn't, we'd probably
have gotten the dakota 3.9 instead.

btw bore spacing on the buick 3.8 et al is 4.25", legacy of the 215.
