[Amc-list] Re; Brake System Spread Sheet

SNIP
AMC usually bought parts from more than one supplier.

Whether a brake drum was finned, flanged, or plain may not have
mattered.

Agreed! But-----
Aftermarket, I would assume would stock all replaceable interchangeable
components under the same stock number for the purpose of inventory
control thinking logically if for no other reason than a savings in tax
on
inventory. Thus if I find 5 different part numbers for a specific
application
such as the rear axle of an AMC product that historically used a certain
type it makes me wonder why?

For example, one of the few AMC cars that I have more than a passing
familiarity with is the 1980 Spirit and the Spirit based 1980 AMX.
Both I-6 automobiles, both using the AMC-15 rear axle. Both have the
same rear axle ratio and as far as I can tell both equipped with the
same size tires originally and both use the same Ford based front
disc. brake assembly.
The Spirit uses the 9 inch drum for the rear brake. The AMX uses the
10 inch drum for the rear brake. Also the drum for the rear brake has
a row of small fins on it.
Now technically I do not think that either the 10 inch drum vs the 9
inch
or the fins vs not is much of a big deal, but for the purpose of
marketing
it might have been at the time. Thus creating an aftermarket supply
quandary that would have to be solved.
Of course today one of the major benefits of the 10 inch drum vs the
9 inch drum is a replacement cost of $20 some odd dollars vs $100
some odd dollars, so if I could find backing plates and misc. support
parts to convert my Spirit to 10 inch rear drums, it would pay for
itself instantaneously.

Thus when I look at a 1974 listing of brake drums and see 5 different
drums listed by part number when 2 drums would get the job done
it makes me raise the question as to why?

Of course the answer may just have to rest in the unsolved annals
of automotive useless trivia for eternity at this time.
