That's what I think, too.  Once upon a time in 1969 I gunned my '69 Javelin going around a corner in NW Portland with a 300 pound truck driver on the passenger side and I managed to make a figure 'S' on the back end of the right side leaf spring.  It was a permanent condition until I fixed it and later put in a booster leaf and taller rear shackles.

  The shocks are staggered to prevent axle (or rear
  spring) wind up on fast starts.   That's my take on it
  at least. I don't know why AMC decided to do it in
  1970 though.
