Re: [Amc-list] Alternative Engine Options

A: Don't forget the 230 OHC 6! It was used in M715s and the early FSJs.

" At one point in time, AMC sold engines to "Jeep" to be used in
their
" various Wagoner and pick up lines.

[some of] what i know of jeep engine history:

they started using amc engines in '65, with 232s and 327s in
full size
jeeps. the buick 350 was never an option to the 327, replacing
it in
'69. amc engines were back in place in '72 with amc ownership.

the buick was probably chosen because of the 225, which jeep
picked up
from buick probably for cheap when gm decreed corporate use of
the
chevy six starting in '65 thus rendering it redundant.

buick history: the 225 and 350 share a common ancestry; both
descend
from the aluminum 215. this was from the same era as the
aluminum
196; there was a big push on to try aluminum engines out then.
but
they hadn't solved the antifreeze problems yet... the buick v8
was
converted to iron and stretched to 300 since 215 was too small
for
anything but the original corvair-based skylark. 2 cylinders
were cut
from the 300 to make the 225 v6. the deck was raised and stroke
increased to make a 340; bored slightly it became a 350. the
aluminum
tooling was sold to rover, where the '3500' was made up to the
early
'00s, by which time it had grown to 4.6L. when buick bought the
225
back from amc, they put the 350's slugs in making it a 231, or
3.8, or
3800. they have evolved and revised the design over the years.

all these engines still use the same front cover and timing set,
except maybe the latest 3800s.

factlet: the 134 cube mill in the cj was '30s tech. the '60s
tech
buick 225 had twice the hp and weighed -less-.

another factlet: if you want to put a 199/232/258 into a '64-5
american you need a special short water pump used by amc only on
the
'65 american 232 - but jeep used it '65-'74.
