from a V8 torque tube fit onto a 6 cyl torque tube?

A DEFINITE MAYBE!! 195.6-199 engines in Classic/Rebel/Matador used an
AMC15. All others (232 six-all V-8s) used the AMC20. All six cylinder
small cars used the AMC15. Rear brakes will interchange among axle types
(all AMC15 brakes will interchange, all AMC20) but not across. The axle
end flange pattern is different between the AMC15 and 20. 

Hot-rodder's answer: If the offset of the rear hub (distance from flat
face to axle end flange) is the same on an AMC15 and AMC20, it could be
done. The AMC20 axle end is larger, so it should be possible to cut the
center out of the AMC15 original backing plate (to hold the smaller
seal) and modify the center of an AMC20 backing plate to fit. The
thickness of the AMC 15 backing plate section shouldn't be enough to
cause a problem, but the four mounting holes will need to be drilled to
center the AMC20 backing plate correctly. If the outer diameter of the
axle seal is the same for an AMC15 and 20 (possible, but not likely),
then the backing plates will interchange by being redrilled -- no need
to sacrifice an AMC15 backing plate.
