I remember that stuff! Yeah, it's weird. Very stringy and gooey.

More on my dud ball joint: I looked again at it. The top half
socket has a central hole for the zerk, and four stamped shallow
grease grooves to deliver lube from the zerk down the face.

They're too shallow, I suppose to accomodate a cheap stamping
process. (I mentioned earlier the crack along the top side of
the socket stamping.)

Two of the grooves were worn away; presumably it didn't get
lubed when installed hence metal to metal ate it quick.

(Like I said I over-lube if anything, you can be sure that before
tire touched the parking spot all joints were heavily grased,
and with good synth grease.)

Could it really be true that the old stringy crap is better? I'm
skeptical, but hey, these days with quality anything is likely
to be true.
