The VIN and data plate numbers indicate it's US built. I'll have to
check my books to make sure, but I think the R in the body indicates
Milwaukee. All the complete knocked-down (CKD) export kit bodies (to be
assembled in the importing country) were Kenosha built. 

I believe the Karmann built cars have another plate riveted on somewhere
with additional info, most likely in German. I don't recall the location
of the plate or exact data it would contain though.
