they did it because the iron warner was first and until the aluminum
one came along [early '60s?] they didn't have anything else for the
196.

otoh 290s and 304s were teamed with aluminum warners, but again it
would be wise to take a matching tranny and only use the '61 tt
adapter.  and not to press luck with a bigger engine.

that sounds like the amc15.  i was wondering because imho ambos -
certainly later ones - always used amc20s for everything.
