in this past year, scientific american frontiers had a cars of the
future episode; one of the cars was a mercedes prototype with lots
of computer control [very hinky active suspension for one] and you
actually did shut the car off with the 'start' button.

i guess they - and everyone else with this issue - forgot that such
buttons are conventionally labeled 'on/off' in industrial equipment.

floor mounted dimmer switches work this way.
