I agree Mark. I've run front disk brakes with no proportioning valve and
standard rear brakes for years. They work great on dry pavement without
locking the rears. The only time I managed to lock the rear brakes on my
63 American (ran for 6-7 years without a prop valve) was during a panic
situation on damp concrete on a downward incline (coming off a bridge).
All four wheels locked up immediately though, so a prop valve wouldn't
have helped. A prop valve might make a big difference on wet or icy
roads though. You won't know until it's too late. I bet under some
conditions you (meaning me too) never notice the rears locking up. 

Note that 65-66 AMC cars with disks have no prop valve. The rear brake
lock-up situation was handled by using a weaker non-servo rear brake
setup.

Oh, yeah, I meant to add, if I ever get to it I will be adding the
adjustable
prop valve in place of the no prop valve at all setup on the American.
  It actually works fairly well right now.
I have 83 discs up front with 205/60/15" tires
69 9" drums in the rear with 255/60/15 tires
1979 Mustang manual disc master which I have discovered is a 7/8"
master.
The pedal is firm, yet has feel to it.
Takes a good solid effort to lock up the rears, with no loss of control
and no front lockup before it stops.
