I haven't looked at the AMC/Jeep 2.5L in a while, but it won't likely
fit even if it does have another inch of clearance, not without some
work on the left side (intake side... just in case it's not on the left
as I recall...) hump. Maybe a big hammer instead of removal, though I'd
rather make it nicer looking -- maybe a small cut and dish in, or cut it
out and reverse it... hmmm... 

The Mitsubishi 2.6L was a little closer than the GM 2.5L IIRC (80s
Mitsu), but it would have still hit the hump. It's just close in there
side to side!
