I need new wires for my 74 AMX. The originals are dried out.
APD has "date-coded" wires for $79, and non-dated coded for $29.
What are dated coded wires, and are they worth the extra $50?

The date coded wires are reproductions of the original wires used by AMC.
Some people buy them for the "perfect" restoration. Unless this is your
goal, save your money.

I have 2 complete sets of pulleys (to support AC) for a 4 bolt balancer. My
'70 390 is a 3 bolt. Can a 4 bolt balancer be physically put in place of
the 3 bolt balancer?
If the physical mounting surface is the same, then that should work,
balancing issues aside. The balancing could be dealt with during rebuild.
Any other options?
I have had no luck finding a 3 groove, 3 bolt lower pulley. From talking to
different people, I'm not sure they made them. Was AC driven off another
accessory, like the alternator or water pump, up through 1970?

According to the '70 TSM the belt that drove the A/C was the same belt
that also drove
The power steering pump, or if not used, an idler was installed in the
same location a
power steering pump would be installed. Thus there were only two belts
on the harmonic
balancer pulleys, thus needing only two pulleys.
There is also an idler installed on the back side of the belt between
the harmonic
balancer pulleys and the A/C compressor.
Your need now would depend on where the A/C compressor you want to
install lines up
on the crank shaft. If it came from a later car/application you may need
the 3rd pulley. If
so I think there is no problem in doing a 390 vs 401 harmonic balancer,
but would have
check on that as I do not know when 4 bolt harmonic balancers were first
used and if
they are balanced correctly for a 390

Doug Noel at American Parts Deport has new 3 and 4 bolt balancers. I just
bought one off Doug in September. The price is not too bad. Check out Doug
on-line catalog at :
http:\\www.americanpartsdeport.com . But beware you need a high speed
connection the catalog is big even just for that section. If the price is
too high for you an outfit called "Damper Doctor" does rebuilds for about
$5 or $10 more then Doug's new ones. When you building an engine the part
you try and go cheap on , is the one that comes around and bites you. I'm
building a 69 -390 V-8 for my 1969 AMX and doing a write up on the engine
rebuild along with the redo of the entire car for the NAMDRA newsletter.

does anyone know much about the tko 500 transmissions?
will they bolt up to a t5 bellhousing? the bolt
pattern LOOKS close but i would guess they are
different. is it heavier than a t5? alot of t5's have
had a rough life. mustangs, cameros, ect. would be
going behind a 304 in my 62 classic. i know the tko
will handle a lot more tourqe. what about the trans
tunnel. what one would probably fit better? i know
with the tko i can move the shifter up where i want it
to keep my bench seat. questionable with the t5. would
spend not alot more for a well rebuilt t5 than a tko.

TKO is stronger taller and bigger.
The few that have gone into javelins required floor surgery, big time.
You can use the front shifter location wiht an aftermarket kit.
T5 can be built to handle 330ftlb for $1000.00 or less if you do it yourself.
To get the shifter forward you need to use an S10 tailhousing.
Do some online searchs about both these trans as behind a 304 it really is going to be a personal choice. the T-5 trans built to 330 ftlb spec will hold up fine.
The bolt pattern on the TKO is Ford toploader IIRC, not T-5.

I am not sure but willing to take an educated guess
that a Mustang application TKO-500 transmission will
go on your 304 using a t-150 bell housing. That is
basically what a Mustang application Tremec
transmission needs to go on to an AMC V8.
The difference to an AMC guy is that a Mustang
Application T5 will go on your 304 by using a
SR4, T4 or T5 application AMC bell housing.
Multi-bells seem to have this application plus
others too. The other applications of a multi-
bell are T-96 and T-14.
Fit would be a crapp shoot but solvable, cost
comparisons would largely depend on where you got
the transmissions from in the first place. There are
a lot of T5's that have not been beat up, the one
that I have in my Javelin behind a 390 has been there
for over 10 years and came from a 100,000 mile 2
owner wrecked Mustang that had been slid into a
telephone pole. I drove the car before I pulled
the transmission. Also T5's can be rebuilt to handle
more torque for not a whole lot of money and give
better 1st & 2nd ratios to boot. I am beginning to
look for another t5 to put in my 360 Hornet. I figure
to get a good used (Mustang application) T5 for
$500.00 or less. I don't know if any of this is
any help to you, but the way I figure it, you
pays your money and you take your chances.

Pretty new to AMC, but not to old cars. I recently bought a 68 Rebel
convertible. We were blessed with fine weather at the weekend so I took
it out for a drive. I have a couple of faults/niggles and if anyone on
here has advice/experience, I'd be glad to hear it:
The Speedo needle dances around all over the place - at about 60 MPH it
is flicking wildly between 15 and 90. The odometer works fine (at least
it turns round and I reckon the numbers are about right for the miles I
covered). Logic suggests to me it's the speedo head at fault but my
ex-wife's logic always seemed somehow different.....
BTW I have bought a little gizmo that measures speed very accurately
using GPS signals - but I need to repair the "proper" speedo.
The other thing is a sort of shimmy that shakes the whole car as I pass
through about 40mph. It seems to be coming from the front end. If
anyone's experienced this I'd be glad to hear about it.....
