Art, if probing the wire right in front of the trailer splice (the most
obvious possible cut location) doesn't work, probe the connector for the
steering column. It's very possible that you have a bad signal light
switch. You'll have to either back probe the connector or use a jumper
wire to supply power to the correct pin with the connector unplugged.
The rear lights have a separate contact in the switch from the front
lights.

I am placing a large order with Edelbrock today that
includes 2 Pro Flow injections systems (already sold).
Due to the amount, I will make freight meaning I can
save you some money off of my regular price. I need
to know by 2pm central time as that is when I will put
in the order. I am not ordering anything extra, just
what I need for existing orders. Please contact me
directly if you wish to purchase something. It would
be a great time to get some of the larger items like a
set of heads or an injection system.

Thanks,

Nick - what is your impression of the Edelbrock fuel injection system. I
assume you like it since you are ordering some, but any specific good/bad
points about the system? Street use vs racing, reliability, HP gains, etc.

Good Afternoon,

I'm looking for opinions and experiences concerning shocks, specifically:

KYB Gas-A-Just & GR-2,

Monroe Sensa-Trac,

Edelbrock Performer IAS & Classic IAS.

What shocks have you used and liked, and disliked? When Spring arrives (on the calendar) I am going to finish sorting out the suspension on my Eagle. Thanks.

i've used gas-a-justs long enough to exercise the lifetime warranty,
and i can tell you they're quite stiff - great if you're performance
oriented, forget 'em if you're not.

i have them on my '68 american with hd springs all around. they
stiffened the suspension up even more, very noticeably.

I put the Edelbrock IAS shocks on the front of my S10 Crewcab.
Slightly stiffer than stock, reduced shimmy in front over bumps compared to stock.
They seemed like a nice all around shock for the 10-15K I drove the truck after I put them on.
I have low pressure gas shocks on the front of the American. I think they are gabriel, they where bought at Advance auto back in 98-99. The used to call them their "classic" or some similar name. They work nice, not harsh at all and offer good control in turns and on rough roads. My car has V8 springs and poly bushings in it and it is a little harsh anyway, but the shocks are not the culprit as I had them on before I swapped in the springs and poly bushings!

In my opinion KYBs are noticable superior to Monroes. I have
'em in my 70 Hornet. I forget the part number; got them from
Summit. They're 2 years old now and like new. Price was good too.
They seem to exert more control (more damping) than Monroe,
but they're not jarring or stiff.

A: Comanche (MJ) came out in '86 with the option of 2.8 V6 (carbed), 2.5L
TBI or carb, or 2.1L Renault diesel. All other years (till the end in late
'91 as some '92 titled rigs are around) were 4.0L or 2.5L with TBI. I don't
think the 4 cyl Comanche got the MPFI the XJs got in '91. (Haven't seen any
yet, even in the '91 I looked at) 904 auto was an option (I have a core one
with the TBI flexplate and CPS in my parts collection I am liquidating for
the last time. It would work well in an early Rambler with the TBI 4 cyl)
and so was the AW4 to fit both the 4.0L and 2.5L.
I recently found an '86 Ramcharger with Nissan 3.3L diesel that I bought
and took to Canada for my oldest son to make a work truck out of (just
wednesday night) It just needed an injector pump and being it was from
Canada originally, the owner here couldn't license it in WA state.

Comanches came out with 2.8L V-6 -- I think they came out in 86.
Anyway,
I've seen ONE Comanche with a V-6 factory installed. Most as you
stated
are 4.0L.

A: I get rid of the slow cold engagement with a can of STP engine oil
treatment. Seems to be about the only thing that stuff is good for! (quite a
few owners on the FSJ list have used it for both 727 and TH400 as have I)

Yeah that makes sense.
Probably explains why the slow engagement is not as bad if you
start them, put them into drive for a bit then go to reverse.
We saw a lot of high mileage cars go that way. I'm not a real
trans guy the shops around here used to have one trans guy. I've
done a few, but it's been a long time now!

A: I think I'd be more tempted to run a 318 than the V6. 4.0L is the only
stock way to upgrade though! At least the firewall has the hump after '84 to
fit. Still want to do a 304 conversion for giggles but I don't have a shop
right now. (I've been looking at the 327 that no-one wants for $100 with
TH400 adapter and thinking I might put it into my '73 J4000 for grins as I
have another QT tcase I could slip in. That would free up the '77 AMX 304 I
have for another purpose. My buddy is talking swap for his '82 Spirit as
it's driving him crazy from the gas tank crud clogging the carb and he can't
get traction in the cold. *sigh* so many ideas and no time/place to do
them!)

that would be the chevy 2.8 and tf904.

you were looking for a tranny for your comanche, right? iirc
they
were all made in the aw4 years.

" The previous owner said it runs but leaks oil real bad and has

you have a golden opportunity to replace the 2.8 with the gm 3.4
crate
motor. it's made to replace 2.8s in s10s and takes all the
accessories and manifolds [carb included], but i don't recall if
it
has a fuel pump or not... you also can't use the flexplate
since it's
for a 700r4, but you can remove the balance weights from your
original
and use it. this is 50-state smog legal but even if it wasn't
it runs
clean enough and passes visual [duh!]

or if you want more power, you could take the 3.9 v6 and
tf999/32rh
from a dakota and swap them both in. i think novak has mounts
for the
3.9 if you don't want to fab your own. this should also be
legal as
long as the donor is newer than your jeep, and iirc all daks
are.

A: 241 does indeed share pattern with the other 6 bolt round cases. I have
one that I test fit to my 727, 999, and AW4 23 spline cases. The NV241 DHD
came with 23 or 29 spline inputs (I'm kicking myself because the one I had
and sold was 23 spline and I didn't check because I was told they only came
29 spline (AAARGH!)
The Dodge 4x4 trucks with Cummins and 727 came with 23 spline (non-turbo)
and 29 spline (turbo) till '93ish. The depth of the input gear changed @'93
and they added a centering shaft to the trans end. The tcase doesn't need
it. (The '93 1/2 42RE I had was this way with NV249 tcase and 23 spline. It
fit the '96 AW4 fine so it was a deeper input than 727)

Russ

Snip
I'm looking for opinions and experiences concerning shocks,
specifically:
KYB Gas-A-Just & GR-2,
Monroe Sensa-Trac,
Edelbrock Performer IAS & Classic IAS.

What shocks have you used and liked, and disliked? When Spring arrives
(on the
calendar) I am going to finish sorting out the suspension on my Eagle.
Thanks.

Russ (from Pa.)
1988 Eagle Wagon

I have used the KYB on my Donohue and lets face it, they are a premium
type gas shock and they work well,
I have also used Gabriel, Monroe, and the local CarQuest generic shock.
All of them served well and I have no complaints with the shock or their
performance.
All of the could be referred to as better than OEM gas shock replacement
units. These were all used on my AMC stable which is a pair of Spirits
one an AMX and my Donohue. The others were routine replacement units on
my newer drivers.
For the most part I will see what I can get on sale. If nothing I will
generally revert back to the local CarQuest store where I do business a
lot. I do not think that you can go too far wrong with a good grade gas
shock. The premium shocks such as KYB sure do a nice job though.
This is in reference to 1970 and newer AMC cars. The 1969 and older
trunion front end shock are in general obsolete and have been for quite
a while.
They are available from a number of sources under some form of obsolete
part numbers and those shocks can be any quality and generally you have
no choice. Although some better grade shocks are available from premium
manufactures, or were anyway.
The two Hornets I have under construction will get Monroe gas shocks on
one of them 'cause I have a set of them sitting on the shelf. The second
Hornet will probably have CarQuest store brand. Once again a gas shock

If you were to go to the following web site;
http://www.amccf.com/
And follow the directions to enter and follow further directions to get
to "technical" information and then scroll down you will see a shock
absorber list in there that gives a variety of shocks and part numbers
and although it is fairly complete I am sure that individuals will find
others. I fact I have some on file that are not on that list.
Check it out.
It may answer a bunch of questions.
John
