Bob,

Two sets come to mind for a 71 Javelin that fit really
well.  Hooker Super Comps and the 1&5/8" Hedmans.  The
Hooker headers hang a little low on the passenger side
but usually isn't a problem unless you have the front
end sitting low as well.  If you don't have much of a
cam, then the Edelbrock shorty headers will work
without any collector issues as they end right where
the stock manifolds would have.

Dan,

These look like a set of custom forged pistons where
the customer asked for a dish designed around a
specific compression and quench area he/she wanted. 
Doesn't look to be anything odd to me and they look
new.

I can't quite figure out which pistons are in this 390
motor that  I am 
buying with the SC/Rambler behind it. They are
reported to be .040 over 
but 
I have never seen this particular design.  Has anyone
on the list seen

thanks to you jay, and the others for their words of advise, I am going 
to try that. i also went on line and was surprised to find that for
13.99 you can buy new ones fomr advanced auto parts. they show a
listing for 75-80 pacers, and 81 and up concords and eagles, hard to
beleive its a common part liek that so thatsz great news for all of
us., might be worth it for a spare anyway. and I think its the similar
to a ford part too maybe thats why. regards to all,

The two big differences I've seen in switches is how they mount and the 
wiring connector.

Also, the last time I replaced a headlight switch (78 El Camino which 
had the same problem as your car), I had a heck of a time finding a 
decent switch. I started with one made by Wells and it was just garbage. 
It was literally worse than what was in the car. The second one I tried 
was made by Echlin and it had a bad circuit breaker in it. I ended up 
with one made by Borg Warner. My 68 American has one made by Standard in 
it which has never given me a problem but I replaced that switch about 
10 years ago so I don't know if the quality is still there or not. My 
advice to you is to buy either a Borg Warner or an AC Delco switch.

BTW, I was looking on AC Delco's site and the switch you want it C1549 
(they didn't have it listed under the Pacer but I was able to cross 
reference one of the switches from Advance's site) and it was used up to 
91 in the Cherokees (and mid 70's Dodges) so you could always pick one 
up from a Jeep dealer if you wanted to.

I have a set of exhaust
manifolds from a 78 Matador and also a set from a Grand Wagoneer (late
70's,
not sure of the year).  I had always assumed that they were the same,
but
they're not.  The driver's side is the same, but the passenger side is
different.  The manifolds from the Wagoneer extend down 2 or 3 inches
lower
than the ones from the Matador.  Both were V8's of course.  The Matador
has a
360 and the Grand Wagoneer had a 401.
 
Can anybody shed any light on this?  Why would AMC have made two
different
parts for the passenger side?

Here is another variation of an answer to this question. 
The intermediate body style (or compact depending on your definition
that was announced in 1970) when used with the OEM V8 engine had to use
the 1970 "Log" type manifold to clear the strut rod mounting bracket on
the passenger side. This manifold was used originally only in 1970 on
the Dog Leg cylinder heads for the V8. The cars are the Gremlin, Hornet,
Concord and Spirit. All other AMC cars did not have this interference
problem. The "Free Flow" exhaust manifolds were announced in 1971 and
used supposedly exclusive on all other V8 applications to end of
production. If you were to install a V8 in an I6 equipped Hornet etc.
you either had to install the 1970 log type manifold on the passenger
side or notch the strut rod mount for clearance. Both of these
approaches have been done. The driver's side used the Freeflow manifold
introduced in 1971.
As any of the cars you have removed an engine from could have had some
time in the past a replacement engine installed that was originally in
one of the 4 cars with the interference problem that might be one source
of how they got that way. As the exhaust systems are not interchangeable
though but as some parts of the country such as where I live exhaust
systems are primarily bent to fit replacing the exhaust system is not a
difficult or even one that takes much thought. 
However periodically over the years I have run across reports of a
second type of freeflow exhaust manifolds that are physically larger
than the "normal" ones and when I do run across reports of them they
seem to be found on early to mid 70's Jeep truck applications which is
all I know about them. 
Last but not least, AMC has done some not quite understandable or
logical OEM assembly practices that defy description periodically which
in this case may have something to do with running out of parts at the
moment a particular car goes down the line.
While this is probably more information than you ever wanted to know, I
hope it helps answer the question

i've been thinking about dieselizing a cherokee.  for them, toyota is
a natural choice as they both used similar aisin-warner trannies; i
narrowed it down to a 2L-TE with a stick for my approach, but volvo
also used the aw auto and when they dropped the vw diesel and started
making their own they put them together for at least a few years.  bad
news: volvo doesn't sell diesel cars here.  also, the mill is a -5-.
good news: volvo marine does sell the engine here, and it's powerful -
160 and 190 hp from a 2.4L!  that still leaves you scratching for the
flexplate etc unless you can find a helpful parts person, but it's a
big step forward.

toyota diesels - and most japanese engines - are available pretty
reasonably as low mileage used pulls from japan.

with a spacer where 2nd would be, thus explaining the bizarre shift
pattern.  this raises the question of whether the aa mainshaft would
also work in a np540...  i did discover that 540s were made with lots
of gear combos, and the one jeepers would want is a np540fl from a
ford f500.  they were used late '60s to early '80s at least, with 300
sixes and 360 v8s, and have the widest ratios: 7+:1 granny 1st, ~4:1
synchro 2nd...

A lot of factory parts?  How do you figure that?  Doesn't the CJ T-18 use the same crossmember and already has the correct input shaft?  The only things that pop into my head that you'd probably have to chase down are driveshafts and maybe the trans tunnel cover.  Are you thinking of a T-18 from a full-size Jeep?  In that case I would agree with you due to the long input shaft.

BTW, since I wrote that last reply someone finally sent me a VIN from their CJ that appears to denote a factory 304/T18 combo.  I'd be more inclined to believe it if they sent a picture, though.  Its not like its hard to figure out what the V8 VIN should be...

As for the np540, its probably a good setup based on the gear ratios and its about 40lbs ligther than the Clarks, but I still don't think many Jeepers are going to go running after a manual trans that weighs 160lbs by itself.  I can see it as more justifiable in a full-size Jeep, but if you're going to have the extra length on hand anyway, I think most people that have the real estate in their rig may opt for more modern, synchronized hardware with a bigger aftermarket like the NV4500.  The other issue is transfer case compatibility.  Unless you're running a divorced transfer case, this could be a bigger headache than mating it to the engine.  A 7:1 first gear is great, but not if you're stuck with a NP205 or some other 2:1 transfer case.  The T-18's 6.32 + a factory NP 2.62 or 2.72:1 transfer case still beats it.  And if you're building your rig for low-gear action, do you really intend for it to see enough highway that you need an OD?  YMMV...

I'm running 1-ton gear under my CJ-8 and the current drivetrain is a wide T-18 mated to a 1980 Scout Dana 300.  The wide T-19 would be nice, but I might consider one of the big 5-speeds if there was a decent transfercase to be used.  Its already going to be heavy with the V8 and D60/D70 + armor, winch, etc.  I'll just leave the little lady at home and then the trans would only "weigh" 50lbs.  Lol...

WANTED: Perhaps someone in the AMC hobby has a 1970 Javelin Project 
languishing and needs to find a new home. I may just have that home. Must be 
a V-8 1970 Javelin, 304 SST a plus. Manual Trns, twin grip are a plus but 
not critical. I am willing to change this all over anyway. Interior must be 
original and complete, black or red is a big plus. Solid floors, rockers and 
trunk is a must, however a managable amount of natural unit body lightening 
is acceptable, original white car a plus. Front sheet metal is not much 
concern, going all fiberglass. Window glass must be all complete and 
unbroken and NO air conditioning. My vision is to build a White/Red, red 
stripe 304 SST with fun modifications. Car need not run or even be assembled 
but must be towable. This is much to require but ask and ye shall find. Will
