Find a Concord/Eagle/Spirit to get the factory cruise from. It's the same amount of work (or less) as installing one of those cheapy aftermarket cruises, it has the correct factory appearance and function, and it's less likely to fail than the cheapy units. In fact, most of the aftermarket cruise units utilize the exact same servo assembly and control box that AMC used on their factory cruise units. I've done this exact same upgrade several times on AMCs, and it's not a bad job to do.

Those "magnet around the driveshaft" setups have never impressed me. It seems very makeshift at best and if the magnets ever come off or the flimsy sensor bracket gets bent,  then what?

I'm considering adding cruise control to my 77
Gremlin.  The cheapest aftermarket kit I have found is
from Audiovox.  It uses magnets (on the driveshaft
presumably) to detect the speed.

Does anyone have any experience with this unit or
should I try to pull a cruise from a later model AMC
Eagle or Concord?

If you feel out of place, Imagine the feelings that run thru ones head while being a virtual invalid for 4 month. One finds oneself questioning the real purpose of things. Life goes on around you. You add to the work load instead of carrying it. You see the real people that care, it is very easy to tell. The ones that care send you 4 get well cards and visit every other week even thoguh it takes them over an hour to get there. The people that raised you and had you get by with one visit in four months and 3 phone calls. The second set of people live closer!
  Yeah, it's easy to get lost wondering where it all leads. Like stuff we all "get old".
Remember that the alternative to getting old is worse! The only real alterantive is after all to not go on at all!

Price as of now is only $39, and a lot of the parts look like they're still in original AMC packaging.

Unless your in a hurry I would look for a GM based add on kit on evilbay.
The magnetic kits do work well though.
   Pulling cruise from any later model using the GM column will also work as long as it worked in the car it came from of course! 
  The main benefit you get from th efactory kit is not having the added magnets to deal with. You do have to change your speedo cable out to get factory units installed.
  Don't get anything from an efi equipped vehicle or try to add cruise to a standard shift unless it is specific for standard shift! The EFI vehicles usually use the ecu to run the cruise, you don't want that and the programming of the standard shift units is different, plus the added clutch dissengagement switch. A friend put on in a stick car from an automatic. It did not work right at all and was downright dangerous!

 I've felt like that since I was 15. For whatever reason the things I identify with had their hey day before I was even born. 

The best I've been able to sum it up is the following:

Heathkit used to sell a version of the Dana (now Rostra) cruise 
control system.  It used the same servo and electronic control module 
as the OEMs, but used a "magnet on the driveshaft" speed sensing 
setup.  I had one; it worked pretty well.  The sensor is only as good 
as the prep work you do and the tape you use to hold the magnets to 
the driveshaft.  Make sure everything is clean.

Of course, if you can get one of the tach generators that go in the 
speedo cable, that would be better.

GM cars from the 1980s with cruise should also be suitable donors; 
they used Dana cruise controls, plus they have the same steering 
column, so the switch should fit.  You might have to get a special 
speedometer cable made up, though.

At some point, manufacturers began integrating cruise control into 
their engine management systems, so the Dana setup fell out of favor.

I remember buying an SX/4 with aftermaket cruise (magnets on the 
driveshaft, knob on the turn signal stalk to select speed) and being 
disapointed untill I used it; I actually liked dailing up my speed 
better.  Having said that I also added late 70's AMC cruise to my 1969 
AMX , it was very simple.

Yes, I have a piece of Literature for I believe a Pacer Sundowner from as I 
recall 1976. I'd have to dig it out.
But Ford was not the only car company to put out a regional decal (ed) 
model type car. The most know of the Ford's is
the Twister Mustang made for there Kansas City region , but AMC which had 
it marketing heavily influenced by Ford marketing
did this sort of thing also. The Badger State Javelin , done for the 
Milwaukee zone comes to mind, but there are others. The item of literature 
I have is rare example of one which had enough promotion to have a item of

I never heard of the Gremlin Sundowner model.  I know the Eagles and
Concords had a Sundancer package in 82.  Any pics or literature on the
web for the Gremlin Sundowner?
