Don't go to that much trouble, just swap drive gears! The distributor
works fine turning either direction as far as I remember.

Dave, I might be mistaken on the bearing in the tube -- might just be
V-8 models or 63-66 models. You have a TSM though, take a look at it!! I
know, I hate to read the instructions first too... ;> If there was a
bearing it would have come out with the shaft. Even if it was torn up
the inner part would be on the shaft.

Anyway, if the u-joint is tight make sure you change the sleeve bearing
in the end of the trans. It's in the tailshaft housing right behind the
rear seal. Look at the TSM first, but it should drive out from inside or
outside, new one drive in the same way. Use a wood block to drive the
new on in. If you mushroom the end a little you can dress it up with a
round file, but be as gentle as you can and take it slow and easy! If
you don't have a brass punch or drift you need to get on. It's hard
enough to drive things like that out without scratching steel, and won't
mar aluminum as bad as a steel punch either. Also doesn't create sparks
if there are any fumes around.

Yes, I forgot to mention that they are 16" diameter.

-Spro
Hmmm... I may have to check them out when it's tire time! Right now I
need the 5.5" backspacing with the 15x7 wheels. I don't have room for
another inch, but is the Liberty wheel is a 17x7 with 5" backspacing I
might have room for another half inch. Wanted 205 or 215 65 series 16"
tires, had to use 70 series 15" to keep the same diameter. 17" might be
to tall w/65 series though. Will be another year or two before I need
tires though!

I understood your point Larry, and I agree with you about the "concours"
judging. I guess that's the main point your were making. I must admit I
was "taking up" for AMO a bit too... but no one's perfect!

My point was just that the Chevy engined car was in the right class if
you think about it -- definitely a modified AMC! The only other choice
was to turn the guy away, and if he was a member of the local club
sponsoring the show, that would be very difficult. But someone
complained because the car was judged along with "real" AMCs, and it
ended up a funny situation that opened up a can of worms for the club.
At least it was eventually resolved with a class for non-AMC powered
AMCs.

I'm not so sure the judges didn't look under the hood of the Chevy
powered Hornet so many years ago. I think the incident did bring the
question of what to do with non-AMC powered cars to the fore-front, and
it caused a stir within AMO, but I don't think it did any more than
bring up more questions. I would never have asked for the award back,
even if I thought an award was made by mistake. I'd have to hear quite a
tale to return an award, that's for sure!

Yada Yada Yada yada
************************************************************************

Frank, etal . My point is 1) some one should have noticed the car had a
Chevy engine in the Hornet while it was being judged. That the engine
was
the wrong color and had the distributor on the wrong end. That's just
poor
judgment and no training for some thing that obvious. 2) Wanting the
trophy
back after the fact was tacky and again , poor judgement on some ones
part. 3) Unfortunately many people take car shows way too seriously
especially when trying to promote them as "prestigious national marque
car
shows" or "Concourse" either live up to the standard you trying to
promote
or just call it a judged car show and have fun with it. No one or the
other, but DO NOT call the show a "concourse" when you only doing a
haphazardly judged car show. My my father use to so crudely put it "shit
or
get off the pot" Not the first time some has bungled a car show judging
and
not the last. All the clubs have done once in while. This now water under
the bridge , but was to me funny and very glaring.

hopefully, my "bad bearing" issue was in the transmission. disassembled it. it had all kinds of build up all over in it. bearings were sticky, rough spinning, syncros were in good shape, but stuck. got a couple cans of brake/parts cleaner, tore it all apart, cleaned them all up real good, stuck it all back together. feels nice and smooth, shifts much smoother than before also. HOPEFULLY this does it. if not, just going to have to live with it till i finally find engine and tranny and get started on my swap. all the seals and everyhing look good. no where had bearings for the transmission. big suprise. one place could get me one of the bearings, but the other bearing no one even showed. these idiot kids they got workin the desks at these parts places now are total idiots. was trying to see if they had any gaskets for it. tail shaft and input shaft gaskets, cover gasket. dude kept asking me if i wanted a "pan" gasket also. i told him about 4 times it was a t96 3 speed manual.
no "pan". looking in the wrong books and all. i hate how they do parts now days. kids that dont know what they are talking about, and dont want to listen to what you try to tell them. anyway. going to get the car all put back together today. see what happens

Tom, this looks like a great way to protect this info.
I'll see if I could set this up. I would be willing
to relenquish control to someone else that wanted to
"own" the dealer list. The amcyclopedia folks have a
copy and might want to ??? (Matt and Farna iirc
http://www.amcyclopedia.org). Though removing it from
my webspace isn't the best because there are several
active websites linking to it.

I was thinking first of the Creative Commons licenses.
They have
an interactive website that lets you customize legal
copyright
boilerplate to achieve various ends.

As an example, I assume Steve would like to retain
copyright
control over the work (note) but allow others to
modify/add to
it, and to prevent commercial resale of the entire
work without
his permission. JUST AN EXAMPLE.

There are also the various GNU licenses, but CC is
easier to
use for this.

They are tough to find but ZJs came with 16" stock on some and the offset is
more inwards than XJ wheels, but they were a little wider too. 2wd XJ/MJ
rims are narrower (like Eagle rims)

iirc the zj rims are 16x7. the eagle rims were 15x6; xj/mj can be
either 15x6 or 15x7. in addition to the moabs there are some 15x8
wrangler rims. all have similar if not identical deep backspacing.

My 6310 (classic, six) most definitely has the bearing in the
middle. I suppose you could leave it out, but if the shaft
developed a wobble...

He's already got an odd axle, right?

Joseph is looking for a 140+ amp for his Javelin. Several questrions, has
anyone heard of these and could point him in the right direction if so. And
also, what is the max recommended alt one can use on a 74 Javelin? I know
that a 65amp altenator was offered for Fleet Duty Police & Taxi AMCs, but my
question is what 'could' be the highest amp used on AMC without torching the
wiring system? Thanks in advance to all who might reply, be sure to copy

The cut on the cam gears is what spins the dist. How easy is that to change?
Sure you can change things around, to spin it the other way, but at the end of the day you've spent a lot of money for a little problem. Suckey as it is, it's cheaper to buy a rebuilt distributor.
You could build a gear drive setup for the cam with no idler. That would spin the cam backwards, then you need a new cam profile and gears to match. Easy fix, I'll whip one of those up this evening, should be ready to ship out first thing in the morning!
I'd try to track down a rebuilder and see if I could sneak the source of their units out of them. Sometimes some careful snooping and reading between the lines can lead you to sources for this kind of stuff.
