I Dont know how to say this ,,,,But First, know Ive always loved
A.M.C.. I own a gremlin a hornet a comando and a cherokee. But
recently I read about engine weights and found a 302 is half the
weight of a 304.
I was toying with the idra of a stroker ( 304 bored 40 over to
acept a 360 head [20% larger valve stock ]and early 70s forged 390
crank ), when I ran into a problem with the journals.
For less than half the price of all that I could put a mustang 302
with 4 speed auto inplace of the 727. disc kit on the model 20,
Coilovers infront,edelbrock TPI and i'll smoke anything. GOD HELP ME!

Half the weight ?>  Is it an Alum. block 302 ?

And starting with a 304 is absurd > start with a 360 minimum
and toss in Nicks Forged Con Rods & some forged slugs unless
you're looking for 9K rpm shift points on the street.

The cast crank is good to 7k and is lighter.

The DOHC Ford V8 is a howler, but you've got to
juggle cast parts there as well unless you're starting
with a COBRA motor > and why then start with
a 302 when you can have their 5.4 DOHC V8
and that Supercharger item on top >>??

For what you had 'planned' with a 304 AMC, 
you can have in a 360 AMC at way less cost.

It was a nice looking 4door until that scene.  They
really tore that car up.

On another note, the list activity seems to be
dropping every month.  Just today, there has only been
3-4 posts over the past 9 hours.  Lately, we are lucky
to get more than one digest per day.  Some days not
even that.  I remember when there were as many as 7 or
more complete digests (12-15 posts per digest)per day.

In channel surfing this morning I caught the last clip
of Prison Break 
for 
tonight and caught a Rambler coming towards camera and
clipping a door 
off a 
parked car.  Have these guys got smart and decided to
use a Rambler to 
make 
their escape?

also: both can bolt straight up to the aw4 auto used in jeep
cherokees, since toyota used them too.  the tundra a343 auto is also

come to think of it, the turbo supra used an aisin warner r154 stick,
sibling to the ax15 in 4.0 jeeps, so there's manual tranny swap
potential.  then there's the '80s supra m-family six, which might be
short enough to fit an '84-6 cherokee and uses an ax5 sibling
tranny...

There's no way in bloody fubar that a Furd v8 is half the weight
of any other v8 motor, ay em cee or otherwise. It's a baseless
argument-starting falsehood.

I would be surprised if any contemporary cast iron american V8
engine from that era was more than 10 - 15% different than any
of the others.

i agreee, mostly.  the amc and small ford v8s aren't that far apart in
weight, maybe 50 lbs.

brace yourself.  from the late '60s, the buick 350 is down below 500
lbs dressed, whereas the iron-head 426 hemi is nearly 850.  afaik
these are the extremes.  [btw buick also had the lightest big block]

there is ~100 lbs difference between sbc and bbc, ~550 and ~650 lbs.
likewise between the small ford v8 and 429/460.  the fe weighs ~750,
the chevy stovebolt 6 does too, and so does the gm 6.2/6.5 diesel.

I meant of course similar designs; it's not a surprise the
big-block GM motor is so heavy. The AMC 8's seem analogous to
the SBC and small Ford, more or less. Didn't mean to make an
exact comparison.

That Buick 350 is light though!
