Just slip the axle right back in. You may have to rotate it once it's in
to line the splines up, but that's all. Nothing else was supposed to
come loose or out with it. Don't know what Russ was talking about as far
as loosening the caps in the differential. May be required on a
different design, but all the AMCs I've pulled just come right out after
a good tug. Once you get the axle splines lined up (it will slide in a
little more) you sill probably have to put a block of wood across the
end of the axle and give it a couple whacks to seat it. Loosening the
caps as Russ suggested might make the axles pull out/push in easier, but
it's not necessary.

The only exception is the late model Cherokee axles -- they have C-clips
in the diff that hold the axles in, the backing plates don't. C-clip
axles require the diff cover to come off and the clips removed.

Neil, you can get new universal type seat belts from
www.julianos.com/seat_belts.html. They should fit in place of the
original Eagle belts with little modification, if any.

dana 35 like the amc15 did not have c clips.

i don't know about the dana 44 either way, or the mopar 8.25".

I have a set of 14" AMC volcano cap wheels. What is the widest tire size
I can put on them? How about on 15"?

Also, does anyone have any 15" AMC wheels for sale?

Thanks.

I am looking for a 59 Rambler Custom radio with pushbuttons. I would like it
to be cosmetically good, but it doesn't have to be in working order. This
is the BIG Rambler, not the American. Let me know if you have one or know
where to get one.

Johnny; you don't have to remove the yoke, true, but
that seems to relieve some stress on the axle, making
it easier to remove them. I once banged away with a
hub about 5 times, then removed the yoke and it came
right off. So I just do that as a habit as it only
takes a minute plus it gives me a chance to see whats
happening inside that pumpkin. Also it gives me a
chance to drain the rear end grease.
The seal and bearing will come off with the axle.
Don't lose the shim, have the bearing/seal replaced
and if the axle is going to be used for performance
then have the hub and axle welded.
Either way take it to someone to have it retorqued,
your TSM or older Motors manual will show the proper
set back..........Russ

it depends on the rim -width-. radials like wide rims and these are
probably 6", so i wouldn't go wider than about a 215/75 or 205/70.
going the other way, i've successfully run 185/75s on 6" rims.

do they have to be amc? if you're putting full wheelcovers on, nobody
will know they were mopars... and you can get steel 15x7s easy as
they were used on many '80s rwd cars and vans.

I know it has been done for years but the last thing I would do is weld the hub to the Axle. Not something I would be willing to take a chance on with my classic car!
I'd rather have a hub spin again then snap off due to fatiqued metal from an improper weld.
Ever see a quarter panel after it ate a tire'n wheel???? It's lots easier to repair a spun hub. If you want to try anything to strengthen it have a second keyway cut in the hub and axle. The check the torque to make sure it is good after you run it and get it hot a time or two.

Last word on this- forgot to mention checking the end
play. The TSM will show you how to do this or an older
Motors manual. Don't rely on Clymers or Chiltons as
they seem to be short on this info. Inserting the axle
isn't hard as the splines go into each other easily
and as stated they may resist a little as the excess
grease needs to be squeezed out. Another reason to
remove the cover so you can guide the axle better.
They are not fragile critters in there, but if you
just stick in the axles and pound away you may chip a
spline, it's happened before (who me? I never!!).
Why not pull both axles, replace all the bearings and
seals at the same time, adjust your rear brakes and
clean things up real nice. Paint the axle a purty
black and get one of those purty chrome or finned
covers. You know the spring bushings are right at your
elbow and I bet the shocks need replacing.
What the heck, toss in a locker......Russ

Thanks for the info, Andrew. I currently am running standard generic rims
with full wheelcovers (I call them hubcabs). However, if I'm going thru
the expense of changing the rims and tires, I would like to try and find
some wheels, preferably AMC, but if not, then something that would go well
with Vivo's bright orange body.

Here's a link to what she looks like right now:

Mark & all,
Another problem with welding the hub to the axle is that the hub and
the axle are made out of two different materials which makes welding them
together very hard or impossible if you would want it to last. I did have
the hub and axle welded once at the dragstrip just to get the Rebel
Machine home, but them replaced the hub and axle with a good one.

looks like a brochure shot!

non amc, but i think the mopar rallies now being reproed would look
good, and i'd guess you could fit the 15x8s with something like
235/60s all around. see http://www.stocktonwheel.com/mopar.htm
i originally had their type 41s in mind, but maybe body-colored 42s
would look distinctive too.

i don't think there are any 15" wheelcovers that'd look good on a grem
- they're made for ambo wagons mostly - and i don't think the little
no-name van/taxi mopar hubcaps would look so good either, so that lets
mopar steel wheels out.

Thanks much to all for the help/advice.

I referenced the placement of the axle with cotter pin hole and paint
marker before I pulled it, put it back in, couple light taps and it
seems ok. Will be able to test tomorrow and if spinning with no
problems I'll put in the new hub, torque to 250 with friend's torque
wrench minding 3/16" hub clearance, check endplay and if all's cool
I"ll take it to a shop to have retorqued.

Possibly another stupid question: Initial torque to attach hub with
or without wheel on? Start it without then put tire on?

When this works out I'm buying all you guys a beer-

   Johnny
