This should be a hobby limited more by the imagination than the pocketbook. It seems that we ANC'ers are the last bastion of sensibility in the "collector car" world. I for one don't need my ego stroked by big dollar values to convince myself that I have a cool car. If that means being saddled with the "Rambler mentality" moniker, then so be it.

Today is 3 years I bought my orange Hornet and the only last repair I
have to make other than a few more modifications is a small tranny oil
leak. Today I pick it up at my friends shop. It has been a long 3 years
of hard and expensive work but the end result was well worth it. I also
saved it being an intact original survivor from being cut up and being
made into a race car with probably a brand "X" engine

I have been looking for an AMC 20 rear end to put under a Hornet I am
working on. I live in an AMC desert, so there are few sources for old
parts and those have become fewer over the last year. I keep seeing a
rear end under Cherokees that has a bulge in the cover to clear the
ring gear. Is this a Dana 35 rear end I hear people talk about? I
thought the AMC 20 was used even in the 80s in Jeep products, but I
have not been able to find one. I don't need a real small car 20
housing (although that would be nice), but just a leaf spring housing
of some sort. I intend to replace the tubes. Also, does anyone make
steel bearing caps for an AMC 20?
I am needing a few parts if anyone has stuff available. 1) Plastic
filler piece for the center AC vent for a '71 Hornet. Blue or black.
2) Dash panel for the same Hornet. 3) AMC 20 leaf spring housing. 4)
Disc brake parts for a conversion. 5) 3191736 casting intake manifold.
6) Clutch and brake pedals for a '66-'69 American.
All help will be greatly appreciated.

I have been looking for an AMC20 rear end to build for a Hornet project
and again have been stumped by the AMC desert I live in. The few damp
places where there used to be some AMC parts have dried up via the
crusher since last year. I really only want a housing since I intend
to re-tube it for some different housing ends and axles, but I can't
even seem to find a Jeep housing. Here's my two questions: 1) Looking
under Cherokees, I commonly find a housing identified by a cover that
is contoured with a bulge for the ring gear. Is this rear end the Dana
35 I see being discussed on Jeep sites? 2) Does anyone make steel
bearing caps for an AMC20?
Okay, now for the parts help. If you ahve this stuff laying around and
want to sell it ofr a reasonable price, email me. I am willing to pay
the freight since you have to ship water into a desert.
1) AMC20 leaf spring housing
2) Plastic filler piece for where the center AC vent would go in the
top of dash for a '71 Hornet. Preferably in blue or black.
3) Dash panel with gauges for the same.
4) Disc brake conversion parts for this Hornet.
5) Stock early intake manifold. Casting 3191736.

There will always be expensive desirable cars AND inexpensive undesirable ones. Only the brands will change. I had a guy from Uganda stay at my house for two nights as part of the touring African Children's Choir. He saw that I had 3 cars and told me that I must be a VERY rich man. It's easy for me to watch Barrett Jackson and forget that if I own my own home and a car, that puts me in the wealthiest 3% of the world.
But there will always be a transportation playground for the fiscally challenged. Right now, if AMC is it for you, then so be it. Usually what's true is that the cheapest car to own is the one you already do.
So I have a 1973 AMC Matador with the 258. I have yard sale E-T Unilug mags on it, poly suspension bushings in both the front and rear, a Delco HEI distributor, a Delco 3-wire alternator, a Clarion in-dash AM/FM/8-track player that was intended for a Ford LTD, and the cooling system and trans cooler from a junked Ford Aerostar van. It isn't quite weird enough for me yet so I plan on converting it to propane this winter.
Right now however, it's 300 miles away getting (I think) the timing chain/sprockets replaced because it broke down on the way home from the NAMDRA event. THANKS to all the AMCers who stopped to see what they could do. I REALLY appreciate it. Especially Jeff who helped me trouble shoot it and to Phillip and Heather who took it to their place to repair it. My wife was really impressed with the "brotherhood" of the whole thing.
I could care less what the "collective" hobby does. It is what it is. If all the AMCs get scrapped for the metal value OR if they go up in value 100 times, either way, I'm fine with it.
I raced the Inliners International annual event this year and I believe I may be the only AMC in that club even though there are a ton of AMC 6-bangers out there. I don't care.
If I convert to propane and there is a "propane nationals" of some type, I may go there as well. If I'm the only AMC there, I wouldn't care.
When I went out to buy a "hobby car", I went shopping specifically for an AMC because I always thought they were underrated and I liked the "7 main bearings" idea. But that 4.2 liter GMC inline-six that is currently being made is cooler than any AMC-6 ever made. That's an awesome motor. But I've now got more into the Matador than it will ever be worth and since I keep making it weirder, it will keep getting harder to sell. My co$t per mile is extraordinarily high. My wife doesn't understand it which seems pretty fitting since I don't understand it either.
But I am way beyond owning something weird on purpose and then holding it against other people that they think I'm weird. EVERYBODY is weird. Either that or they're faking it.

A 70 Hemi 'Cuda should probably command a decent sum, if not the amount they do, which is ridiculous, as it is nothing like a Duesenberg. But only 5 or 10 of them were ever made, out of what? Hundreds of thousands of B-bodies? So these are truly rare, uranium-like finds. The same with the vaunted COPO Camaros. A few hundred out of a few hundred thousand. CobraJet Mustangs, not as rare numerically, but percentage-wise, there can be quite a few out of MILLIONS of Mustangs.
Others of these cars are simply good promotion. Consider the 1967 396SS Chevelle. Pretty rare, right? Sorry, something like 69,000 made. '70 LS 5/6 anyone? Tens of thousands. But desirable nonetheless.
But when looked at calmly, the sad and simple fact(in my own not so informed opinion) is that many of these cars will not remain at the stratoshperic prices they have achieved. Rarity still must be a factor, as there are only so many who can afford to second-mortgage their homes to keep up with their musclecar joneses.
There are many, and I mean Many, at the top of the collector biz, including the honchos at these auctions out here in Phoenix, who feel that a serious "adjustment" is on the way in the market. When these cars leapfrog over the ability of the middle class to own them, their market shrinks drastically. If all of the filthy rich already own their examples, who is going to buy that 100K Chevelle? The answer, of course, is no one. So it quickly becomes a 50K Chevelle. Then it's back to a 25K Chevelle again, as it has been for years.
Any hotshot on Wall Street will tell you that commodities which experience sudden spikes in pricing must eventually "adjust" to reflect the true demand/supply relationship. We are experiencing this in the housing market in Phoenix right now.
So where does all of this leave AMC? I believe that as time fades the memory of where all these cars sat originally in the marketplace, brand will become less important than type. A 60's or 70's two door hartop will be what someone wants(for example), and they won't care what the badge is on the side. There is a lot of evidence of this already. And as the Chevelles and Galaxies climb out of sight of Joe Average, the Matadors and Classics become more "desirable".
And the Wall Street hotshot from a couple paragraphs ago will tell you that the long-term bet for any commodity is on those that undergo incremental pricing increases over a substantial period of time, as opposed to those which spike and adjust, then spike and adjust again. Eventually, the gap will close more and more, at which point the supply-and-demand factor will take over. So buy those AMC's cheap while you can, but HOLD ON TO THEM. They will eventually become unavailable at any price.
As to the respect factor right now, today, Mahoney is right in that the "quality of the ownership" of these cars will make huge differences in what we have seen in the past. You MUST be an informed owner. You must be a dedicated owner. YOU YOURSELF must make the cars desirable. Refuse to let them go for less than what they are "worth" to people who don't care about them, and they will become exclusive.
If you hoard them as investments, then like any other investment, there are attendant risks.
But if you enjoy them for what they truly are, they will always offer a significant return, regardless of market values

You can tighten to 250 - 300 lbs at home. I have a 3/4"
extention, socket and 24" breaker bar. With the car on the
ground and the parking brake on, put the socket and extention
on the axle nut, and support the end with a jack stand so the
socket and extention sticks out straight, aligned with the axle.
Put the breaker bar on the socket, horizontal. I weigh 150
lbs. When I stand on the tip of the breaker bar it's 300 ft/lbs
of torque on the nut (probably a bit less because my weight is
probably more like at the 21 - 22" mark).
150 lbs * 2 foot lever = 300 lbs per foot
If you weigh 200 lbs and you want 300 lbs torque, calc the
breaker bar length to stand on:
300 / 200 = 1.5 feet (18" on the breaker bar)
torque your lever
wanted weight length
If you want 250 ft/lbs its
250 / 200 = 1.25 feet (15")
I wouldn't do this rough stuff for anything precise but it's
fine when there's a big tolerance like dumb old axle nuts.

Wouldn't any 58?-up six cylinder torque tube axle work? There's
a hell of a lot more 63-65 donors out there than 58-62.

(And that california desert landscape... by Rambler goes through
there every year, really. Though in 1955 that was probably
just up where I10 is now... today I have to drive 100 miles

I have to largely agree. I want sufficient popularity and
cash-flow through AMC owners and vendors so that we have a
supply of cars and parts and information!
As I see it (YMMV) there's three aspects to the Pebble Beach
type car phenomenon:
* a good design (etc) gets acknowledged
* exquisite toys for those who can afford it
* I want people to respect what I drive
#1 I'm down with, and how I read most of John Mahoney's postings.
#2 we'd all love to be rich; I'm too lazy for that. If I really,
really, wanted to drive a Nash-Healey, for example, I would
find a way, and I would enjoy it.
Having the prices of AMC products go through the roof will
not improve ANYTHING for anyone except open more collector
niche for the rich. BFD. I won't make more parts appear --
that happens when cars are driven on the road and wear out,
and someone can make money producing parts, to sell. Numbers!
Look -- how many $250K Corvette restos are out
there? 25? 50? 100? 500? Is selling that many NO$
bumpers/hoods/cylinder heads gonna improve the situation for
daily drivers? No. What would $100K AMXs do for anyone except the
owners of them? (Whom I would wish very well, in our case! :-)
Would there appear more Classic parts? No. And the AMX stuff
that would become available would be what's already expensive
and hard to get *now* (grilles etc).
#3, if you do things that embarrass you, stop. If there
are things you like to do, you should not be embarrassed
by them. If you are driving a car in order to impress some
real or perceived Crowd, well, that's why there are so many
Mustang/Camaro/Chevelle clones out there!
If there is a "Rambler mentality" it's in whining about how
AMCs are not cool enough.
Look how neatly we all skirt class issues in the united
states :-)
