quick history lesson - the d35 didn't even exist until amc turned
amc15 axle production over to dana about '87.  axle shafts are
different but the 'chuck' is the same.  only uses for the d35 are
xj/yj/zj/etc rears and ford exploder fronts.

exploders also used d30 fronts.  early xjs used a hd amc15, with amc20
optional.  the amc20 was replaced by a d44 for a few years, then a
mopar 8.25" starting in the early '90s.

on big jeeps, i didn't think the d53 survived into the '60s, but i'm
not an expert.

the d27 replaced the d25 in the late '40s.  it evolved into the d30 in
the late '60s.  the d44 existed at least since the late '40s, the d60
since some time in the '50s.  the d70 might be that old as well.  all
have front and rear versions; d30, d44, and d60 have high pinion
fronts.  both d44 and d60 have evolved, principally in spline count
and from closed to open knuckles.  never heard of a d53 front.

27s and 44s were also made in england; volvo used spicer 27s starting
with the 444.  the famous jag irs used a spicer 44 chuck; jag posis
used to be the hot setup as they were beefier than the american d44
ones.
