I would like to hear if anyone else besides myself and one other person (so far) has had trouble with the Center Force release bearing you get when you buy (and, tragically, install) a Center Force clutch. I can't say how good the clutch is because both of the release bearings I've tried have failed as soon as my car left the vicinity of the shop where the were installed. Center Force is extremely uncooperative and has the customer relations attitude of a hyena with an advanced case of constipation. I want my money back and I want them to stop selling a product that apparently is a release bearing in name only.

AMC guys have enough challenges without being intentionally sabotaged and robbed by a major parts supplier.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Center Force's ineptitude extends to bearings for other makes as well. I can't believe such profound incompetence would be limited to one car make. Surely they would have wanted to spread the grief around a bit. What do you think?

John Newell

Got a question:

If my '67 Rebel has a Saginaw column, then if I decide to change it out for
an automatic transmission conversion, I can look for used units out of a
GM/Chevelle, correct? My Rebel steering wheel should fit?

I realize to make sure of length and all that, plus I'd need a non-key
version, but one that has the auto shifter on the column. IIRC, GM went to
the keyed-columns a couple of years before everyone else, yes?

Thanks,

Jim Boone

First, congrats on getting further along than most of
us on your Summer project! I am hanging sheetrock in
an unfinished basement which is also getting a full
bath, and have a Fall Tree House build, 4 door J20, 4
to 6 Eagle Kammback swap, and an SX4 to start working
on with my son. My pristine 79 AMX 258/4spd is
sitting neglected waiting to be cruised to prove it's
WOW factor and mileage superiority, but I have NO
time!

Anyway, you need to protect your new engine components
from the metal particles floating around in your
engine. Imagine if you had taken those gears, lifters
and cam, put them on a grinder and ground them down
just as you found them. Then take all thatfine metal
powder and pour it into your oil... that's exaactly
what has happened.

I would at least get a Filter mag or something similar
to catch as much in the filter as you can and change
your filter/oil very often the next few months. Spend
money on good filters! The powder could be
impregnated and may not all come out right away. You
might even add a good magnetic oil plug... you could
easily monitor things that way.

Personally I would contact the boys at Bulltear.com
and get an oil pump adapter that will allow you to
have true protection of your oil pump. That powder
can really do a number in your aluminum housing/pump
area.

Might sound like overkill now that everythings running
great, however, when that oil pressure starts dropping
down the line you'll think"Pay me now or Pay me
later!"

Either way, have a great week,

Jesse Serrano, II

Wanted: A driveshaft for a 1970 Javelin 4 speed. From what I understand it
is 50.17 inches in length. The drive shaft that came with a project car I
have is too short and has the wrong yolk for a T-10 transmission as well.
Anyone that has the shaft and yolk all together and wishes to part with it
please think of me. Thank You John Kort kort_j@xxxxxxx 636 931 7432

Yes, the steering wheel will fit. Length isn't to big an issue as long
as the column will extend through the floor and the shift lever won't
interfere with anything else. The early collapsible columns are long
though, and bolt directly to the steering box with no intermediate
shaft. It will be difficult to find a column with the shift quadrant on
the column and no key. Chevy/GMC vans are usually scavenged by hot
rodders because they were the last to use a plain column. If you find a
column with no key and still no quadrant, Southern Rods sells a stick on
indicator for $18.95
(http://www.southernrods.com/categories/hot-rod-interiors/steering-colum
ns/southern-rods-1.html). I'd use the newer 70s style column with a
collapsible intermediate shaft. A G-body column or van column will fit.
I just pulled the key cylinder out of the column I have in my 63 Classic
(a late 80s S-10 column) and popped a chrome plug over it. The plug was
made for covering holes in plumbing fixtures and such. Most people don't
notice it. You'll have to work on the "foot" that screws to the floor,
but the old one cuts off easy enough. I used a couple angle brackets
about 1/2" wide with two hose clamps anchoring them to the column, then
screwed to the floor. I was able to use the original 63 filler piece.
There's always Ididit and other aftermarket columns. Southern Rods has
them for $259, complete with turn signals and such.

when i was 14 or 15, my first vehicle, i bought it from my uncle. a 1971 ford f100 4x4. all beat to hell, been in the family since it was bought brand new. strong drive train. paid $1000 for it. my stepdad paid $500 on it, and for the remaining $500, i changed hand line sprinklers for a guys alfalfa fields for 2 whole growing seasons. in the high altitude north west, thats not long. had 2 fields, each one had 2 lines running anywhere from 1/2-1 1/2 miles long, at 40ft sections of pipe. lots of hard work. i thank my stepdad for that. i worked my ass off for that truck, made that truck actually mean something to me. and when i broke something on it cause i played to hard in it, guess what, i had to pay my own money to fix it. no one ever gave me no more money, help, nothing on it. i was on my own. when i turned 18, my grampa gave me my 62 rambler classic. it had been sitting in his field for 20 years, when i was 16, he bet me i couldnt get it running, i got it running THAT
day, and when i went to visit them, i drove it around his big farm. when he gave that car to me i told him it was going to become a show car, and driven with care and appriciated. just before i came in the army, i busted the ford 9" rear in the 71 ford. it has been sitting at my grandparents house where the rambler sat for 20 years. thats been almost 5 years now. the rambler, it is at ft sill where my wife is at now, drove it almost every day till i got deployed, won most unique and original classic at the local car show with it even. i had to call my grampa imediatly after the awards ceremony to tell him. by the way, i am only 23 years old now. i grew up in this late "that car aint cool i dont want it i want ...." generation. i cant stand them little bastards that are that way. i worked my ass off for my 71, and my rambler was the ONLY thing i have ever been given that was worth more than $50. i learnd "appriciation". i am very thankful to my stepdad for teaching me that
and helping me with the $500 on my 71 or i might not have been able to afford it.

The first one I put in the American was a parts store special and noisy at full release within months of install, very limited usage too!
The one in place now is a name brand one from either Lakewood,Mcleod [SP?] or Ram, My memory fails me as to which one it is. I will buy nothing less in the future and I would have thought the Centerforce would supply a quality part also. Thanks for the heads up!!!

The folks below are going to attempt to repair a grill, Doc, you have been repairing grills and possibly could offer some assistance, and anyone else wishing to chime in on what epoxy or plastic weld kits they use feel free to comment and thanks in advance to all who might, be sure to copy your reply to Tim also.

Hi Eddie,

Thanks for the reply. As for fixing the grill I have, I don't think I have the tabs to put back on it. Can you find them somewhere? Do you have a trick you use? Also, could you tell me the brand of glue you use? I am familiar with some of the plastic glues used in model building, but am afraid to try something due to the thought of the plastic melting or something. Sometimes a rough grill is better than no grill. The AMX grill I have needs a little glue work as well. Anyway, thanks for all your help and the info on the guy with the bumpers.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact me.

Thank You,

Tim McDougald
