But now I'll always see those sorts of cars as melted chocolate easter

Oh I bet that wouldn't be that bad. The doors appear to be the same, and
I'm sure the cowl is; front valance and headlamp area probaly differ,
but since hidden from view you could bracket it up.

That would make a nice sportabout. The rear bumper would be a worry, as
well as the trailing edge of the fenders.

It seems to me that I read somewhere recently that some one in Tucson
was looking for these seats for exactly this purpose.
So I will sweeten this offer just a bit for an Arizona or points
in-between AMC hobbyist.
Father's day I am leaving in the AM to drive from Phoenix to Santa
Clarita. For those of you who failed geography that is just north of the
San Fernando Valley, across from Magic Mountain. I will come back the
following Wednesday to Phoenix. This route will go with in a stones
throw of Mikes house.
I have a Chrysler Town and Country that will hold some combination of
these seats nicely I would think, if there is a Lister here or on the
way using I-10 that would like to take Mike up on his offer but the cost
of today's gasoline is a deterrent cut me a deal for a tank of gas and I
will pick something up and drive them East.
I caution though, I am not in the position to store a seat or sets of
seats to be picked up some time later.
I once sold a set of split bench hornet seat for an SC 360 clone that I
had accumulated and was able to work that into 2 sets of badly damaged
74 Hornet Levi Buckets that when cannibalized and rebuilt will be the
basis for the interior for my 1974 Hornet X Levi Hatchback when it is
done. These seats could help someone. The same thing went into a set of
head rests, which were the only interior parts missing for my 76 Hornet
X Sportabout.

Some sort of thing with moon phase or something.

Along the way I had front seats from a 1973 Hornet completely
reupholstered in a light gray, with 2" ribs. Non-stock but nice. The
side plastic trim covers are ugly but are minor and held on with a
single screw, externally.

They are like-new; they have about 20 hours of butt time. I'd sell 'em
cheep just get the room in my lab back! probably not practical to ship.
I'm in Los Angeles, Silverlake area.

Since this subject has come up recently. I have a question. On both my
74 258 Hornet's the factory water temp sender is in the front of the
head. There is no other spot to put the after market gauge sender except
where that pollution vacuum advanced timing valve is at the drivers side
of the block behind the exhaust manifold. Why is there is a big
temperature difference between the two locations on my orange car and
not so big a difference on my yellow car with the same gauge and sender?
And there is no fan shroud on my yellow car and one in the orange car.
"Doc"

----------------

Doc, on the early cars only AC or HD cooling package cars came with a
fan shroud. They usually had a seven blade cooling fan also, or a five
blade on those that usually had a four blade (50s-mid 60s car). I would
think the difference in cooling on your cars would be opposite -- the
fan shroud improves the efficiency of the radiator by pulling more air
through a larger area, so the water coming in is cooler, making the
water at the mid block location cooler as well. Could be a partial
blockage in the block of one car, or a difference in timing or other
tuning specs. Could be that the AC evaporator is blocking air flow
enough to make the water a bit hotter too. Did you check temps with the
AC on or not? There are other minor differences in the cars, and could
just be age.

I am hoping that only brushes in my alternator are bad... 65 American,
Does anyone know long after '65 the same altinator was used??
According to TSM I have brushes are easily replaced, going to try to
change brushes before I scrap the entire unit. Local parts store lost
my main guy to new hardware store in town... kids left on counter know
how to tap into computer only..... you guys know the deal, cars did
not exist before '70 or so in computer databases...... Parts book,
whats that????

thanks in advance..

------------------------------

Jay, don't go to a parts store unless you're looking for a replacement.
Check the yellow pages for "Auto Electric" and see if there isn't a shop
in your area. They will be able to refurb the alternator for you. They
might sell you brushes, but if not shouldn't charge to much to replace
them.

July 2006 Hemmings Classic Car, somehow I had got through life without
seeing photos of the pre-1952, or was it pre-production (the article is
totally unclear) Nash-Healey. Now I like the headlights-in-grille 1952
NH -- who doesn't -- but the plain thing on p. 70 is a goddamn Nash
Rambler channelled, roof chopped off, cab moved back, and to me pretty
much the prettiest two-seat car I've ever seen, bar none, no exceptions.
Inline six! Three speed! Side curtains!

So I've been thinking, how could I make one? I care not for
authenticity, Cars Are For Driving. Clearly it's a stock Nash grille
(article says so and it's also obvious). Hacking a bathtub Rambler is
probably crazily impractical. It's vaguely Healey-ish, but far more
Nash-ish. Oh woe is me.
------------------------------------------------

Well, you could do the same with a 58-60 American, except the headlights
would be out on the fenders. What you describe is exactly what I have
planned for the 62 American two door sedan I have stashed back home
though. I've even considered moving the cowl back, but that would be a
much more difficult to do thing than sectioning the body -- which will
be hard enough around the firewall. I plan on cutting 3-4" out, but
leaving the vent windows and roll-up windows in the welded shut and
smoothed over doors. I considered moving the cowl back just enough to
eliminate the vent windows, but that would leave a very short roll-up
window. I didn't want to get into cutting the door latch pillar and
moving the window mechanism back. A longer hood (ala Budd XR-400, a
modified 62 Ambo) would be nice, but I think way more work than I'm
willing to do. I have an article on what was done to make the XR-400,
and I have a 62 four door for extra parts, but it's still more than I
want to do. With a slab sided car like the 58-60 American a four door
could be used and the front door and cowl moved back then use the rear
door as a filler panel in front of the cowl. That "arrow" indentation of
the 61-63 means you can't move panels like that without major surgery.

For pics of the XR-400:
http://www.hfmgv.org/exhibits/pic/1999/99.sep.html
And here's a good article on Budd with factory photos of the XR-400 at
the bottom left. Just above it is what appears to be the prototype for
the Nash Rambler, but it could be the earlier 600. I believe it to be
the Rambler due to shape of the body and the front suspension. The Nash
600 used a Lancia type suspension that resembles MacPherson struts.

(The car in HCC has the headlamps out on the fenders...)

For me, right now, this is worthless hot air, but this afternoon it
occurred to me it might be easier to make a hotrod chassis, and skin a
bathtub American to create a body for it; that way I could get around
the unibody structural problems I'd create, or the weakness of removing
the roof, etc.

It would need to be sectioned the entire length. Probably could use the
hood close to as-is. Leave cowl-forward intact, gut firewall for the
motor length. Roof, off. The rear quarters would be actual work though,
to get the classic line (from the front fender down) to the rear haunch.

I don't have an indoor place to work on cars; I have too many things to
do; we already have a full stable of cars; I don't have the body skills
but hey perfection isn't needed for fun or reliability.

Eh. Nice to think about though. I'll keep a mental eye on this project
though. Maybe I can find a Healy with a bad driveline, gut it and
Ramblerize it, call it a Rambler Healey :-) Won't be as pretty as that
thing in HCC though.

Frank I have the five bladed factory fan in the orange car with the
factory shroud. In the cooler running yellow car I have a 7 blade
Flexi-lite fan and no shroud. Same engines, carbs adjusted properly, and
timing set the same. Maybe you are right and the A/C condenser is
blocked with dirt and cutting down the amount of air flow. I will have
to blow it out. I should be easy as the grill is still not back in yet.
The car also has a new water pump, 180 degree thermostat, the cooling
system was chemically flushed after I got got the car and replaced the
bad heater core and installed a boiled out 78 Concord A/C radiator and a
coolant recovery tank. The previous owner had removed the thermostat as
he said it would run hot when the A/C was on. But he was a so called
mechanic and as I worked on the car I saw all the jury rigging he did.
What a butcher. I will see about adding a small auxiliary electrical fan
and an auxiliary tranny oil cooled by passing the one in the bottom of
the radiator and adding a 2 quart larger tranny oil pan to help cool
things off a little more.

On the rear bumper the rear quarter edges the 74 and up are the same as
the 73. On the 74 and up the bumper brackets are different and the
rubber filler fills the edges of the quarters where the non 5 mph 73
bumper fit. Add a 73 bumper and the aluminum rear filler between the
tail lights and you have a 73 non 5 mph bumper rear car. The 74 and up
even still has the recess in the rear pan for mounting the license
plate. I still like the later Hornet's except for the bumpers.
