More on Steven Schall's passing away, many of you remember him from his convertible red AMX at shows:
http://www.planethoustonamx.com/Photo_Gallery_My/images/mycars8_jpg.jpg
he also was building a AMX 2, and wanted me to find him a Bricklin 1974, and had sent me some photos of another creation he was doing, which was a highly customized Opel GT, you know those look like baby Vettes anyhows, but this one was stretched and he told me proudly it would be AMC powered!

I have two photos from a email I sent Jock Jocewicz of NAMDRA, who let folks know Steve passed away the other day. Below is a email I also just got asking me to share it.

In a converstion with his daughter Julie last night, I expressed sympathies and prayers from Paige and me to her family, just like Bart Mangrum's family as Bart recently lost his dad. Jodi, Steve's daughter, told me that 'he died doing what he loved' which she found some comfort in.

The last thing he did?

He had the convertible AMX in the link above on a lift and had changed the oil, the drain plug still out of it. He went in to take a quick nap saying he was tired......and God Bless him, he never woke up. She said he had clogged arteries and went quick, and quietly in his sleep.

Everyone who appreciates something different from AMC will really miss Steve. A true customizer in the real sense of the word, he had a great eye, for doing things different. Maybe the way 'they should have been done' like that AMX Roadster. The word 'visionary' quickly comes to mind. Just like it did with Teague.

Just wanted to let the amc world know that Steve Schall, the maker of the amx convertible has died. The hobby has lost a talented, outgoing, and knowledgeable man. His family has already notified Jock of Namdra and I'm sure he is also helping spread the word.

Subject: E-bay scam

Hi Eddie,

Here's a new twist to the e-bay scam that I nearly fell for. The seller has a friend bid up the car, then he offers you what looks like a legitimate second chance offer, but on your private e-mail account, not as an e-bay message. The e-mail looks identical to an e-mail message, down to an e-bay address. Fortunately, I told him that I would only pay cash for the car in person. He then told me that he moved to a different state, but promised to ship the car as soon as I Western Union him the money. He assured me that since this was an official second chance offer that e-bay offered me insurance on the transaction that he had already paid for. I had a brief moment of sobriety and smelled a rat so I walked away. The he had the balls to send me an e-mail, threatening me if I didn't complete the deal. I sent the whole thing to e-bay fraud and they closed him down, but who knows how many suckers he swindled? The good news? Weeks later I bought a sun-baked, barely running!
1972 AMX for $3,000. It's a big project, but I'm already making good progress. Thanks for providing the service that you do.

Thanks again,

Dave

I just installed a Petronix Ignitor II in my Rebel Machine this weekend. Perfect instruction, easy installtions and took about 35-45 mins. All of that for $89 can't beat that and no light to get dirty.

so, i just bought that t86/r10 overdrive. guy said it does not have the solenoid or governor tho. does anyone have these parts, or know where i can come up with them? i have never had any experience with an overdrive unit. also, i have never had my torque tube apart so i dont know what im going to be looking at in there. sombody told me that the t86 is a top shifted unit. my 96 is shifted on the SIDE. i am really going into uncharted territory now. hehe. does anyone know what gear ratio is in the 62 classic 196 rear end? or did they come with several? i found a wiring diagram for the overdrive. all these switches and crap the guy had everywhere. is there a simple, more stock looking way they were wired up? thanks for all the help everyone.

the person who told you that was probably a jeeper; they were that way

just guessing - several, i'd think, and probably steep if your 196 was
a flathead. maybe 3.31 - 3.58 with an ohv and o/d.

Jeff, the Mallory Unilite I'm familiar with is a complete distributor.
The early ones had some problems, but that should be taken care of in
the current versions.

If you want to retain a stock look the best bet is a Pertronix Ignitor.
It installs in place of your points, and you can keep a set of points in
your glove box just in case the Ignitor fails (which is rare). You have
to run a switched power wire to the Ignitor, that's the only give-away
that something has been changed, and that's hard to notice.

The next best for a stock look is the AMC model Ford Duraspark. It will
look like a later model, of course. As someone mentioned, it was used
from around 1978-91 on all AMCs, including Jeep Grand Wagoneers.

You can go one step further and apply the TFI upgrade to the original
Duraspark distributor. Rather than redesign the whole distributor when
going to a high energy system like GM did, Ford continued using the same
distributor body with an adapter for a larger diameter cap. TFI stands
for "Thick Film Ignition" and is equivalent in performance to the GM
HEI. As noted it uses a separate coil. To get the full benefits you need
the special TFI coil as well as the plug wires and cap. The wires are a
necessity when using the cap due to the connector, but it will work with
a standard coil (but not much point). These parts can be purchased from
any auto parts store -- ask for the cap, wires, and coil from a 1984 or
so Ford F-250 w/460. It's best to search for "TFI Upgrade" -- part
numbers are listed on some sites.

Dunno, but I can look it up in the AM I think if you'd like

looking
way they were wired up?
SNIP

I have a wiring diagram for your year, I would have to make a copy and
get it into a format that I could send to you.
As far as simple, the factory parts are to the best of my knowledge at
this time (to be verified);
The O.D. relay used to turn the unit on or off. 3 wires
The Kick Down Switch, manually operated used to drop out of over drive
for acceleration, 4 wires
The O.D. Governor used to keep the overdrive from functioning under a
given miles per hour, I think about 30 or so mph. 2 wires.
The O.D. Solenoid, used to shift the over drive in and out as it
functions as a 2 speed transmission. 2 wires
And one wire going to the distributor used to short out the ignition so
the engine will not run while the O.D. transmission is being shifted.
This simulates (rather crudely but effectively) the action of taking
your foot off of the gas pedal and depressing the clutch while shifting
gears as you would for a standard transmission.
John

thanks for all the help everyone.

I have three Wagoneers, (1975,1976, 1985) and a VW Rabbit (1979) for
sale, $60 a piece, I just want the price of scrap. I would like them all
gone by July 18th.

Three of the vehicles, (2 Wags, 1 Rabbit) are repairable to drivable
condition. All of them are located in Minot AFB, ND 58704.

Pictures of the '75 and '85 are at
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v221/Nicca64/Jeep/Forsale/

Also, the 85 listed in the link above has a new fender and doors, and is
virtually dent free, but surface rust aplenty in the 1/4s and front
valance, but no rust through.

The pictures of the '76 Jeep are at
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v221/Nicca64/Jeep/LewisnClark/

And the pictures of the rabbit are at http://afterflux.net/rabbit/

I would like ALL of them gone as soon as possible. You can call me at
701-727-8063, if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Christopher

AMC team,
I'm sure this has been asked before but as I am new I was
wondering if
someone could go through the process of converting a 1971 AMC V8
Javelin
(360 4bbl) from points to an electronic ignition. I looked at a
Mallary
Unilite system this weekend. It appears to tuck inside your
distributor
cap and break a light beam which causes the ignition to fire.
There are
also extra wires that come with it that have to be hooked up. I
am going
for a somewhat stock look so my question is this: Did AMC or
Jeep make
an electronic factory distributor in the mid-80's that will work
on my
Javelin ? Please describe what's involved with the conversion
and what
car is best to pirate the parts from. Also, if there are any
modules,
relays, wiring harness, fuse panel issues to keep in mind.
Thanks for
the help. At $89 to Unilite looks like a pretty good value.
Goodbye
dwell ...

I did get my copy of the Muscle Car Enthusiast this weekend and
the Dyno
article on the AMC 390 and the article on Guy Hasdall were both
excellent. I encourage you to go out and grab one soon.

I subscribe to AMO, NAMDRA, Hemmings Muscle Machines and MC
Enthusiast.
All are enjoyable for different reasons. Does anyone know if
Muscle Car
Review was back up and running ? That was my favorite but it bit
the
dust about 4 years ago.

Dave, get the unit for a 1965 Chevy II w/230 six since you have the OHV
engine. The distributor is identical except for shaft end and length,
and the way the body clamps to the block. For those with the L-head, get
the Pertronix unit for a 65 or so Ford Falcon with 170 or 200 six. The
OHV uses Delco (GM) electrics, the L-head Autolite (Ford) -- at least
from 1961-65.
