why the old bendix stuff? they're expensive, cranky, hard to find
parts for, and don't stop any better than say '82-3 spirit disks.

" This is actually something I've meant to ask a real auto paint

" linking into long molecule chains. If the temperature is too
" high, they cure too fast, resulting in shorter molecule chains
" and are weaker because of this. If the temperature is too low,
" then the reaction doesn't happen at all, and it never cures. In
" any of the industrial epoxies I've used, there is an optimum cure
" temperature range, for strongest results.

i'd like to know this too, but i wouldn't be surprised if baking still
produces a tougher, less brittle finish.

I'm pretty sure the tooth count is different, but it also depends on the

SNIP
The Bendix 4 piston Calipers were used from 1966 to 1971 as an optional
brake on AMC cars. That includes cars such as the Marlin and the AMX and
others. They are considered and obsolete brake and for many years
replacement maintenance parts were unavailable. Many of these parts are
now reproduced and are available over the counter from AMC vendors. One
of many is
http://www.ramblerparts.com/
Galvin's Rambler in California. Major vendors will carry these parts.
Other sources would be;
Kennedy American Inc.
7100 State Route 142 SE
West Jefferson Ohio
43162
Tel: 614 879-2283
And check the following web site;
http://www.planethoustonamx.com/ This web site also has a large vendor
list associated with it.
While these brakes may appear to look like the newest deep pocket brake
conversion that peek through the spokes colored in candy colors from
Eastwood and all of the current rage, they are not what would be called
the preferred brake conversion but finicky, problem prone and expensive.
Any of the AMC disk brakes can be installed on any of the AMC cars by
removing from the donor car all parts back to the steering knuckle and
bolting them on to the car of choice. There are a few pit falls to avoid
depending on your selection of donor brakes but they are very dealable.
They are commonly removed or have been anyway and replaced by later
units for both cost, serviceability and reliability. These items in the
past were commonly throw-a-way parts and in most circles probably still
are.

SNIP
also, i forgot to mention, i am having a hard time finding disk brake
kit that

SNIP
There were at least two rear disc brake conversion kits that I am aware
of but I do not know if they are still available or the vendor is still
in business. They were very pricey. One gave emergency brakes, the other
did not.
You might want to check with the following people.
http://www.amx-perience.com/california_classic_amc.htm
However one of the better ways to accomplish this task is to use a Ford
9 inch axle with disk brakes. One from a Lincoln Versailles will work.
Of course a Ford 9 inch is extremely heavy. You might find it feasible
to use a Chrysler 8 1/4 from something like a Duster and put a MOPAR
disc brake conversion on. However which ever direction you go you may
find it extremely pricey to do a full disc. conversion.
John.

someone on this list has them. tsm [the streetrod manuf co] has them.
ssb and probably others have kits for the jeep amc20 which should
be usable with the right rotors.

the amc20 housing flange pattern is the same as the ford 'small
bearing' 9", 3 5/16" w x 2" h. fyi '80s jeep d44 and d35 too.

Happy Mother's Day to all you momma's. Arnie Goodrich sent me this neat
video, although a little shaky, it is 4:38 minutes long of a AMX smacking
around brand x cars like Mike Tyson smacked his momma for Mother's Day. I
don't know you need a Media Player for this but it came up fine on mine and

I enjoyed the video and the car's performance, but...

...wasn't that bracket racing, where they aren't racing each other? It doesn't look like there was
much competition for that guy at the track that day. lol

Justine; driving a new-to-you car cross country is not
for everyone, especially those feint of heart. You
don't know for sure what lies in the road ahead for
you.
I gave a guy in Nor Cal the same idea about a 67 rebel
wagon that I knew of here in Salem. He showed up by
way of Greyhound with a tool box, cell phone and dough
in hand. He also brought his son along. They bought
the car and headed South. Last I heard they made it.
I did this with a 64 Fairlane some years ago, but
without the cell phone (still don't have one). I did
bring along my 10-speed, though! Just in case, ya
know. The drive back gave me a chance to write down
all the quirks and noises, and get into kind of a
strange zen state, driving a strange car, unknown to
me, across the Oregon desert.
Yeah, it broke down in the middle of nowhere. I did a
little campin', met a hippy chick who gave me a puppy,
a taste for cottage cheese and pears and some
memories. I got back to Salem about 4 days later.
Camped out for 3 days while I fixed a wheel cylinder
supporting the car on the water cooler.
Would I do it again, you bet, in a NY minute......Russ

John, sorry for your bad experience. It happens to
everyone. Don't expect show quality work, but there is
a professional restorer in the Portland area sends all
his basic restoration work down here to the Salem
store. One of his Buick's (late forties) was being
done when I went to get my AMX. They showed me his
Stude waiting in the yard.
I might add that you don't want to send your car in
with the $1800 tires and wheel combo, as they will get
over spray on it. Get a set of beater tires and
wheels, I always keep a set around, and send those.
Unbolt the wipers and trim, let it fall into the cowl
with baling wire attached to the shaft so it can be
fished back out. I wrap masking tape around any thing
I don't want sprayed. Unbolt the antenna, tape up the
mast and let it fall into the well.
Use body tape, not cheap masking tape. Again, like
everyone says, PPPPPP (prior planning prevents piss
poor performance)......Russ

I didn't say earlier, but this local shop I used (Dave & Sams), I walked
around in their lot looking at their work before we had the first car
done. Incoming wrecks to cars in final detail, and in between. Pretty
good work over all; some were getting work finer than I got, likely
insurance work. I negotiated downwards from the original estimate. An
"old fashioned" shop.

These guys were pretty good about overspray; none in the engine, where
there was some was in areas most people don't care about; rear leaf
springs, from front rails, a bit on the tie rods.

THey were old-fashioned slow too; MAACO and the like are probably a lot
better at time management!

Sunday was a nice quiet peaceful day. The wife went to church and after
that my son took her out to lunch and then they went to my daughters for
the afternoon. While watching the Formula One race I worked on my grill.
A couple of hours more of sanding and cleaning today and I will be ready
to paint it tomorrow if the weather permits, finally.
