Re: [AMC-List] AMX disk brake kit for 62 classic

SNIP
i am looking for anyone with amx disk brakes for parts. i have a 62
classic 2
door i am doing a little bit of rodding out on. im not sure if they are
stock
on all amx's, but the bendix 4 piston calipers are prefered.
SNIP
The Bendix 4 piston Calipers were used from 1966 to 1971 as an optional
brake on AMC cars. That includes cars such as the Marlin and the AMX and
others. They are considered and obsolete brake and for many years
replacement maintenance parts were unavailable. Many of these parts are
now reproduced and are available over the counter from AMC vendors. One
of many is
http://www.ramblerparts.com/
Galvin's Rambler in California. Major vendors will carry these parts.
Other sources would be;
Kennedy American Inc.
7100 State Route 142 SE
West Jefferson Ohio
43162
Tel: 614 879-2283
And check the following web site;
http://www.planethoustonamx.com/ This web site also has a large vendor
list associated with it.
While these brakes may appear to look like the newest deep pocket brake
conversion that peek through the spokes colored in candy colors from
Eastwood and all of the current rage, they are not what would be called
the preferred brake conversion but finicky, problem prone and expensive.
Any of the AMC disk brakes can be installed on any of the AMC cars by
removing from the donor car all parts back to the steering knuckle and
bolting them on to the car of choice. There are a few pit falls to avoid
depending on your selection of donor brakes but they are very dealable.
They are commonly removed or have been anyway and replaced by later
units for both cost, serviceability and reliability. These items in the
past were commonly throw-a-way parts and in most circles probably still
are.

also, i forgot to mention, i am having a hard time finding disk brake
kit that
will go onto amc 20. ford 8.8 looks close to the right bolt pattern. but
then
again so does the SMALL 9"
SNIP
You would have a hard time, almost nothing exists.
SNIP
. i am in iraq right now so its impossible for me to
take measurements.
SNIP
You and all military people come home safe!
SNIP
just going by eye in pics. im planning on running some 17"
torque thrust wheels so i need something that will look good peeking
thru the
wheels. thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this issue for me
SNIP
There were at least two rear disc brake conversion kits that I am aware
of but I do not know if they are still available or the vendor is still
in business. They were very pricey. One gave emergency brakes, the other
did not.
You might want to check with the following people.
http://www.amx-perience.com/california_classic_amc.htm
However one of the better ways to accomplish this task is to use a Ford
9 inch axle with disk brakes. One from a Lincoln Versailles will work.
Of course a Ford 9 inch is extremely heavy. You might find it feasible
to use a Chrysler 8 1/4 from something like a Duster and put a MOPAR
disc brake conversion on. However which ever direction you go you may
find it extremely pricey to do a full disc. conversion.
