A few years back I put a rear main seal in a Mustang conv that had a Maaco spray job on it. It was sharp. Nice heavy metallic dark red. No funky stuff in the metallic, no strips, no dirt, very glossy with minimal orange peal if any. The only thing it needed was better prep work. It had the body colored side moldings, so they just sprayed them in place. Other then that it was super sharp. My wife has mentioned wanting to change the color on her Jeep. If I ever get to it, I would prep it myself stripping off all the flairs and trim and take it to Maaco and let them spray it. Only problem is the nearest shop is two hours away!

maaco is also one of the few places with ovens to bake-cure the paint
in. they can't give it a really hard bake unless you strip everything
nonmetallic off, but even what they can do gives you a better, more
durable finish.

Hey folks, does anyone know whether a bumper guard will interchange from
side to side or are they side specific? I know some won't interchange due to
the uniqueness of the bumpers. I have a set of NOS Matador ones and it is
two seperate part numbers for instance. And on my Ambassador SST, same deal,
one right one left, however on some models like Eagle, it will interchange,
or rear of 68-74 AMX/Javelin interchange no problem. Anyone know for sure
please feel free to comment. The item link is down below.

Yes, the Eagle hatch/glass and the Hornet hatch/glass are 100%
interchangeable. Keep in mind that the Eagle wagon is just a Sportabout
with 4WD and different front sheetmetal. And, in actuality, Hornets
were available with a heated rear window starting in about 1975 or so.
To carry the thought a bit further, you could use the Eagle donor car
to install power windows and door locks on your Hornet....

Nice solid car, but what's with the Chevy truck moldings on the
side???
Re value--unfortunately, you won't get as much as you'd like for this
car simply because AMC Matadors don't rank high on anyone's value list.
As mentioned earlier, Eddie Stakes tried to sell a 14,000 original mile
71 Matador 2dr for about 5 or 6 years, and finally found it a home.
IMHO, you could probably realistically expect to get anywhere from
$1500-3000 for your car, mostly due to the fact that it's straight and
rust free. Of course, you might have terrific luck and find someone
willing to pay a lotta $$ for it, but like I said, that's my humble
opinion.
Ebay seems to be a good indicator of current market value on cars like
this. Put it out there, with a reserve. If it meets reserve, terrific.
If no, then maybe it will give you some idea of how much you can get
for it.

I have a '73 Javelin with the 14x6 8-slot rally wheels. The backspacing on these wheels is 4". I would like to switch to 15x7 wheels and would like to know what the backspacing on the factory 15x7 rally wheel was for a reference?

I paid $3900 for my low millage 73 in Nov of 2004....there was a guy
willing to pay $5000 for it.....

I would try e-bay.................I went to $4100 on a 72 in early 2004
not as nice as yours or mine.......I think the problem

Jim I don't think it was the color that kept Eddie's car from selling.
The 74 Hornet I bought 2 1/2 years ago was a 99% rust free car from
Florida. It was orange with a puke tan interior with a horrible 70's
style leisure suite plaid colored seat inserts in the seats. The 99%
rust free and the 500$ sale price sold me on the car and fact it was a
74 Hornet Hatchback also sold me on the car. 74 Hornet's are my thing. I
still have my bought new yellow one. I have learned to live with the
orange color after I installed a whole new black interior and now when
it will need paint it will be re-painted the same orange. My son was
interested in Eddie's car but being a 71 with the Warner trans turned
him off along with other issues in the pic's sent. Unless you are a low
mileage car collector a rust free low mileage car can be re-painted and
the interior re-done to your tastes. My low mileage 99% rust free car
was a mechanical nightmare. But mechanical repairs are
WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY cheaper than rust or previous collision damage to
repair.

Your probably right Doc......it did have some issues..... for me it was
the color and the fact it was a 71...I only wanted
a 72 or 73..mine has a 360 2bl /TF...runs really good.....but does have
some minor body and paint issues...no rust....

Eh, the one I had for sale was for sale for a staggering 6+ years. Have
NEVER Atried so hard to sell a AMC. Relentless ads for $4500, then $3500.
Put it on ebay with reserve not, once, not twice, but three times before
listing it for $1900 and NO reserve where it sold for $2650.
This was a 14,000 mile car folks. I drove it all of 208 miles in the 13
years I owned it. It STILL HAD LESS THAN 15,000 ORIGINAL MILES on it when
the fellow flew in recently to drive it home to Marietta, Georgia!

Back to mine, there was only 7776 71 Matador two doors made. Mine was one of
two ultra low miles still known to exist. I mentioned to Jim(?) the seller
who original asked the question what his is worth that one of AMC's slogans
was "The Nicest Car You've Never Seen" for the "new" 71 Matador. AMC had a
sense of humor, humour if Canadian. But it didn't help move the Matadors
either.
As for ebay.....not everything sells on ebay either. This Matador was a
prime case. I am something like 2 out of 7 (better record than Houston
Texans last year though) on selling a car on fee bay.
My fly in drive home 69 Ambassador SST is still for sale for $975 if anyone
interested, hell, the tilt column alone is worth about 1/2 of that:

And my 68 AMX just "sold" or at least I thought it did, however the buyer
was not Nigerian but a 16 year old kid. His dad has agreed to pay my listing

I believe the Matador produced from 71-73 had some sort of image problem.
And I'm not sure why as I really like the bumper incorporated into the body,
seems like AMC got it right there as opposed to earlier 67-70 Ambassador and
67-69 Rebel.
I was disppointed my 72 Matador Z code two door with 46,000 miles in
original Yuca Tan only brought $2650:

Imagine same car...in same condition....if a Sattelite, Road Runner,
Charger, Monte Carlo, or any other intermediate. This was a formidable
401/727, the most powerful AMC had to offer. $2650. And so it goes!
