This is a 64 Rambler Classic which I picked up from a
local junkyard rather than see it crushed. Clean body
which needs paint. An early 232 has been transplanted
into the car by a previous owner. At first I thought
it was one of the scarce 232 4-doors which were made
by AMC along with the Rambler Typhoons, but the
homemade engine mounts give the transplant away.

The car started fine two days ago. It had a slight
lifter tick which went away as it warmed up. All I
did to get it running was replace the burned points
and condenser. The car was horribly out of time too.
The distributor wasn't loose, but it did sit in the
front yard of the junkyard several weeks so someone
could have tampered with it.

Yesterday, when I started it after replacing the worn
shifter column with another used column, there was a
pronounced lifter tick which didn't go away as the
engine warmed and there was a brief loud metallic
sound like something loose in the oil pan. Maybe I
should have shut it down then, but the sound was only
brief.

Tonight I'll pull the valve cover and inspect the
rocker shaft and push rods. I'll also do a cold
compression test before I start the engine, looking
for clues. I'll drain and strain the oil. Any other
suggestions?

Regards,
Joe Fulton

I'd pop the dist and check the oil pump tang and see if I could see anything obvious there and check oil pressure. All the conditions you are reporting sound like they could be oil presure related.-

i'll also admit i've slowed down a lot as i've come to realize just

if i was gonna stick with a stovebolt i'd go for a '60 +/- 261, the

chevy i don't think dropping a jimmy 302 in would be a hack since it
could be done with all factory parts.

probably what you've got is air trapped somewhere in the ps system.
the pump whines as the bubbles go through it, and when the system's
off and they expand from 900psi back to 14.7 they make the reservoir
overflow.

i don't know if it could be sucking air from a crack or worn seal.
that the problem recurred suggests that though. did it leak any fluid

I think the caster on my American is up to about 4* positive. It tracks nice and straight this way and corners well. What I do with these old Bias ply original equipment cars is take the caster up as far as it will go and match it side to side to the one that comes out the least towards positive. As in if one side comes out 4 and one 6, I go 4 on the pair. It makes the steering a little heavy coming off center, but that is usually not a problem with the old overboosted 60's P/S systems. You can get a caster camber gauge for about $40 and do it yourself with a little time and patience. Just be careful and read up on the basics. Do your test driving someplace safe! --

At the risk of being over simplified, short of you putting lock-tight on the
bolts (which I'm not sure if that is recommended) a simple tightening every
week or two should do the trick, at least that is what my mechanic has
recommended. Your mileage may vary.

looks like I got back on the list. I had to
unsubscribe and the re subscribe. Missed you all.
I came across a 1959 Classic 4-dr, basic car but the
PO had sheared a couple of dozen sheep, placed the
loose wool in the car sitting in the barn ready to go
to market, and forgot about it....back in 1961! So
this car sat for its entire life, save for two years,
with a back seat full of wool. The parts of the car
not affected by the wool looks factory fresh except
for a ton of dust. What damage would 40 year old wool
do? Best of all, it is free for the taking. Clean
title.
Next to it is a 1963 Pontiac Catalina 2-dr hdtp with
54K, it looks real nice too. Basic V8-AT-PS-PB (single
resevoir, those pikers) and 4V. Anyone interested in
an old indian before I advertise. $3K and contact me
off list or at 503-589-9845.
I came across a 1982 Eagle wgn at a boneyard this
morn, fully equied including cruise, tilt, power door
locks, 4speaker stereo, PS, PB, AC, and real straight.
Anyone need anything?
There is still stuff left off that 77 AMX. I am going
to finish parting it out on Thurs.......Russ

I'm guessing the damage from the wool will turn out to be from the critters that moved into and out of it over the years, Mouse urine does a number on fabrics and metal. Ask me how I know, The covertible was full of nests!
You can probably write off the interior, but who knows maybe you'll get lucky and it won't be in to bad of shape?
I know if I got it the thing would turn out to be rotted behind the front seats and junk!
   Good luck!
Now the Catalina sounds like it may spark some interest from the Pontiac guys. I googled it under images, very cool retro looking car in a two door hardtop! If it's solid it also sounds like a real "barn find"!

Props! To AOL Bill for helping more people see the way to share in the discussion of today's AMC, to TOCM Mike for helping more people see the way to share the documentation of yesterday's AMC, to Frank/Tom/Jim for helping the world see the way to share and search and re-search all the info about AMC that's fit to know, and to anyyone who saw my 4/28 post that once again went AWOL, Happy May 1st.

Get out your test equipment; the AMC car needs fixin'.

Proposal! To Nick for helping make more money to spend on AMC cars: the '56 Chevy wagon, even with four, not two doors, could prove you smart at time of resale. Or at least tide you over until (if?) AMC wagons become valuable as well.

but, while you may keep your horned Jeeps and creative-clad Corvettes, you may send your Avanti, Barracuda, RS-SS and even Squarebird (never -beautiful-, but condition is) home if you care to. You can send every late-'60s AMC convertible home for a full resto. Despite what it cost AMC to try to succeed by moving upsize and up-market (if one only reads AMC history by Pat Foster, one might believe that tooling the "big" cars --- the convertibles and the '67 Marlin --- along with the '74 Matador coupe (plus the '75 Pacer) was all that doomed AMC to death [he's loath to admit that AMC could've died on a Gremlin-Hornet-Eagle diet also...], but, nonetheless, few ragtops by any maker ever stacked their fabric so well.

If it were a Chevy or a Pontiac, it could be a $100k car someday. As an AMC, it should be even more valuable. As reality, no one really knows.

Proof? From John and his Carefree Cactus Cruiser coterie in Cave Creek:

>>
As far as the weight of the car door goes half
the weight of a Pacer is in both front doors.

And the other half is in the windshield, since the Wankel was so light? And a Pacer with a moon roof will roll over under water to float like a glass-bottomed boat? Was a Pacer what Wagner wanted to haul up [P37] Sun Gold?

May 1, 1926 was indeed the day that Ajax magically became Nash and it was more than just another swap-n-sell Ring on the AMC family tree, but since one of my Rhine maidens had wrist surgery and is not yet back at work, I'm drowning in "to-do" today, so must type it in another post --- IF this one lists correctly. If, like a boat with an untended leak, it lists -again-, I'll just let it sink. You can dredge for it from a Pacer someday and spear it with a Karmann Jav.

John,

Thanks for responding to my question about ram air and what opens and closes
it. Mystery solved.
Any one have any ideas about reproducing this control???? I know the duct
work and scoops are
now being reproduced, and the vacuum actuator is available from somewhere
because Ford used the
same part. I think I could fabricate my own door and linkages, Just not sure
about the air cleaner body
and top and the controls.
