i've been talking to garrett about several possibilities for his
american, and apparently he got my info a little crossed up.

there are a few ways to swap a t-14 in for his t-96, which i gather is
less than perfect.
1. stock, t-14 and driveshaft from'68-'70 american or javelin 232.
i don't think '71-4 jav 6 shafts are the same length.
the '71-2 t-14 has a separate interchange number but differs only
in rear mount location if that much.
2. '73-6 t-14 have a tf904 spline and a rear mount that is off by an
inch or two. there are two yokes that fit it; the longer is long
enough to reach the '68 199 driveshaft. make sure you get the one
that uses the 1" yokes! this is my setup and i've put tens of
thousands of miles on it. i adapted the rear mount with a block
and long bolts, and jam nuts. it's held.

most t-14s have gears that match the t-96, but some time about '72
amc started mixing a wide-ratio setup in, with a 3.1:1 1st iirc vs.
2.63:1. you could step your axle gear up a notch or two...

i also recommended an hd clutch setup while he has it apart. i've
successfully used a perfection hytest rcf448 disk and c1647 b&b-style
pressure plate, but i was poking around online recently and couldn't
find the disk... btw these are for an early/mid-'70s 6/t14 hd 10"
setup and the only hitch in the smaller early bell is a touchy initial
adjustment. very important - the perfection pp, and their c1897
diaphragm type for mid/late-'70s hd, are the only ones i could find
that were really 10" and this is critical with the b&b at least. the
other brands i checked sub a 10.5" pp which fits the bigger v8-style
bell fine but won't go into the '60s six bell.

[just checked partsamerica - they describe the c1647 as 10.5".
hmmm... no hits for 'rcf448' but 'ca1897' shows as 10" 10 spline -
and fitting v8s back to '67...]

there are two bolt patterns on the six flywheel; the smaller, with
5/16" bolts, for 9" clutches and the larger, with 3/8" bolts, for
10"+. another possibility as shown in
http://www.slantsix.org/articles/clutch/sl6-clutches.htm
is the borg and beck #1576 10" hd that fits the small pattern. iirc i
was led to this by finding that the 9 1/8" b&b mentioned is the same
one used on amcs, but i can't confirm that now.

this would also be a good hd for the 196 as they have only the small
pattern.
