" You know, thinking about this a little (but not doing any math!), I

" Basically you're working with an upside down triangle. Reduce the length

" now someone needs to figure out the mathematical formula!!

okay, here's the next step.

v8 cylinder banks are at 45*, so when you mill the head or deck by
amount x, the head moves down (sin 45*) x and in (cos 45*) x - or is
it vice versa? well, for 45* they're the same number...

so the intake face moves in by (sin 45*) x, but unless it's vertical
you have to do the same sin or cos thing with its angle to get the
amount to mill off the intake. iirc [i really should remember this]
(sin 0) is 0 and (sin 90) is 1, so taking horizontal as 0, the amount
to mill would be (sin intake-face-angle)(sin 45*)x, where x is the
amount milled off the deck or head.

if you're milling the deck face of the head, why not mill its intake
face also and use an unaltered intake? then swapping intakes wouldn't
be affected.
