To: AMC-List <mail@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Well, my friend and I figured out it's a 400 model, based on the trim level. After reading the Standard Catalog book, checking Ebay auctions for clues, the 400 has several special and unique trim items, several I couldn't confirm visually in my pictures except for one, I think the " wagon robe rail ", which is an extra piece of stainless trim between the two tail lights, is the deciding factor. I'll check for a padded dash, another 400 item, 2-tone steering wheel, and rear door vents when I go down there again this week(end), to move my last 3 cars ( I hope! ). So, more fuel for thought. The unibody frame in back is rusted out, only reason more people weren't interested in this car before, but it's a beautiful body, not as many made as 4-doors or wagons, shame to see it go away permanently. Have at least 2 interested parties now, so hopefully it'll be saved. I'll be gone for 2-3 days trying to move the rest of my cars and parts this week(end), and then be done with my part down there. Still a '74 AMX, '72 Javelin, and other Concords, Eagles, Spirits , and '66 Ambassador down there to get saved, none mine. Email Ben70AMX@xxxxxxxxx if you are interested in any of his 9 cars. These will have to go fairly quick, no time to lose, only cars to lose. Later, Jerry in Virginia ( cars near Burkeville, VA , 1 hour southwest of Richmond VA down Rt. 360 ). __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! It is a carryover from the days when passengers also had a "lap robe" in the car. It provided a place the hang the robe. It has nothing to do with the exterior trim moldings. The 400 level was the highest level of trim in 1962 for the Ramblers including the American. They had the most luxurious upgraded upholstery fabrics and some extra chrome moldings on the exterior. Some other feathures were standard on this level. For instance the aluminum 195.6 engine was standard. You could specify a cast iron engine at no cost though. I had a 62 classic "Custom" level wagon which was a gift. It had a bad knock in the engine and fairly severe corrosion in the front A-pillars. I bought the TSM and the 62 brochures to find out more about the 62 models. I decided that the rust was too severe for my repair skills and junked the car. A few weeks later one of the Hemmings magazines featured a 62 Classic restoration project where the owner had welded patches in the A-pillars to save the car and I realized that I could have done that. It really rubbed salt in the wound. The 62 two-door is unique. If the eventual owner of that car needs parts, I still have plenty which I purchased for my failed project and have not yet sold. I didn't care for the somewhat futzy nose design (too much detail; the brows in the fenders made it look like a fussy cat) but it was otherwise a great car. It had: padded dash, pushbutton trans, aluminum between the taillights (like the Hornets), rear vents, bucket seats, couldn't tell you o-fish-all-ee what 400 package contained though. The rear vents were great (no A/C), I took my first cross-country road trip (Mass. to Seattle, 1976?) in that thing... 70 mph it got 18mpg. Had 327 and BW pushbutton trans. First car I ever 'restified' (sic). It was just an 'old car' when I bought it for $125. Redid the seats, door panels, dash (the padding was crapped out, I bondo'd the holes and recovered with vinyl), trans rebuild by Aamco (ugh, what did I know), new front end, then paint. Was a cigar-stained puke green interior, I did it all red black and white. http://wps.com/AMC/images/1976-Ambassador.jpg Sold it to a nutty USPS mail carrier guy, who spent a few months (long months...) talking my ear off and the price down to $400. He was a nut, but really babied his cars. Never knew what happened it after that. Sold it probably 1978?
