Wow, I didn't pick up on the fact that it's a two-door... I've never
even seen one before, it would be sweet...

IIRC all the "400" series had bucket seats (big square ones) and I'm pretty sure a console. It might have the hydraulic tilting seats too! Check for an extra lever near the bottom outside edge. It's for a small hydraulic pump. This activated a cylinder that let you "pump up" (tilt) the front of the seat. Nice little feature -- couldn't get that until 6 way power seats came out. Almost as good as the Renault/Jeep "rocking" seats. I'd have put a set of those in my car if they didn't sit up so high (in Renaults and Jeeps).

Folks,

I own a very nice 69 rebel station wagon with a 6 cylinder 232 motor =
with an=20
automatic transmission.

While I really like driving this car it does not have a whole lot of =
spunk and lacks the pure
fun of a muscle car.

Also, I have a complete SC/Rambler 390 with T10 and 3.54 rear and I am =
considering dropping this
setup into the wagon to make it much more fun to drive...

Sooooooo, my question is: what is involved in swapping in the V8? Does =
the Rebel require
a crossmember change similar to other AMCs? What else is involved with =
this swap? Special
parts, items to fabricate, etc.?

Did the AMC 69 Rebel wagon originally come from the factory with the 390 =
engine?

If I do this swap I will do it in such a way that I can revert it back =
to its original state, so please lets
not debate the fact I am even considering this swap.

Thanks in advance!
Peter

as valuable (or as beautiful?) as open ones (especially if they have 4 =

No, the Medallion manual was shown because it was for American Motors =

Expensive by AMC standards and extensive even by those of AMC-Renault. =
Medallion was a much more "important" product than AMC history knows.

I can't quote stories or statistics off the top of my head (and don't =

the whole shebang. Not at all typical of AMC during its final years.

If Renault had hung in there AMC may be more like Nissan today than a =

Well I'm certain mine did not have the "Airliner" seats or whatever that
option was called, nor did it have a console. The Airliner seats were in
the owners manual -- I recall drooling on the page.

I suppose those were extra-cost options. Mine had a 2bbl Holley carb
too. My friends at the time (1970's) of course insisted that it had to
be a chevy 327 (and were dumbfounded when they looked at it) and that I
added the Holley (nope).

Not done YET!!! Close though -- I pick it up Saturday. Just needs some
final drying and sanding.

Damn it looks good! The two-tone, color on top, works perfectly. Exactly
the effect I wanted -- looks like an import-scene car (aka "rice
rocket") made by AMC in the 1960's.

The paint turned out weird -- good weird. On 1999 Audi TT's, it's
straight-up neutral grey (I'd say 5% towards blue, as opposed to brown,
direction). I had 'em leave out the metalflake, which gave it a faintly
bluish cast. With clear coat, in sunlight, it's definitely got a strong
blue tint. There's no way to know this stuff except to squirt, sand,
coat, sand, ...

Luckily the white I picked complements it perfectly. Its far bluer than
I wanted, but it looks totally great. The color is simply inexplicable,
a real standout. And the finish is like glass.

The doors and most of the interior is white, interior vinyl is neutral
gray (same as SEM Warm Grey).

The gray/white line will get a 3/32" black tape stripe. I really want
painted pinstripe, but I will later get nomenclature done in two-tone
white and grey ("Rambler Hornet", "4.2L", etc but in a retro-modern
typeface like I did with the gauges)

(Yes Rambler Hornet, I like that better. Like the Mythbuster guy says,
"I substitute my reality for yours". Only AMCers will know to object.
I'll just say it was assembled in the Azores or something.)

$2000 even total for body work and two-color paint, not bad. The usual
zillion shopping-cart dings, filled all the trim holes, door crease,
poked front fender tip. Who says you can't get good work done in cities?
(Just can't be in a hurry is all.)

wagons certainly came with v8s. not sure about the crossmember.

also, i'm not sure if six-cyl rebels still had amc15 axles then, but
if it does you'll want an amc20 for sure. good news - any '69-up
large car rear is the ticket. imho you'll also want to grab some
late-style front disks. the only diff between large and small cars is
the biggies used the big bendix setup more years and none of the small
bendix etc setups that followed it. and of course v8 front springs,
from espo or eaton detroit or the like. my preference would be hd all
around; they're not particularly stiff by modern standards.

got any plans for wheels and tires?

just a nit: what will you do about the floor shifter hole?

Hello listers.

Can anyone help me with some information regarding twin grip for the AMC
model 20. Did Jeep call this feature "Posi TracK Loc" ? Or is that just a
term a guy came up with cause he couldn't think of Twin Grip.
Will my 2:87 gear ratio in my 70 AMC model 20 work on a jeep track loc
carrier that had 2:72 gears ?? I want to swap carriers.
Get my old open differential out and get in a new "posi" Twin Grip diff in,
but I would like to retain the gear ratio. I seem to recall
discussions on here that referred to the 2:87 and maybe 3.08 gear ratios fit
one carrier and the higher ratios need a different carrier. Any useful
information any one can help me with is most appreciated. I have my eye on a
differential that had jeep 2:72 gears on it.

Thanks,

Armand

In an effort to save "everything but the squeal" from
the 64 Rambler hardtop before it was crushed a couple
of weeks ago, I cut out the front driver's side fender
well. This part includes the part underneath the
battery tray that is sometimes full of rust.
This was a California car in great shape. This part
should fit any 64 through 69 Rambler American. I don't
have the whole fender well. The vertical cut was made
a few inches behind the battery tray area. I can send
pics. Before it goes on Ebay:

$40 plus shipping for the part.
$10 plus shipping for the battery tray.

" discussions on here that referred to the 2:87 and maybe 3.08 gear ratios fit
" one carrier and the higher ratios need a different carrier. Any useful
" information any one can help me with is most appreciated. I have my eye on a
" differential that had jeep 2:72 gears on it.

i've just learned that while most hummer models had 2.73s and a few
had 2.56s, one heavy model had 3.08s. it's just possible this gear is
made to fit the 2-series carrier, unlike the jeep 3.07 and 3.31. it
would simplify am general's parts situation to have only one diff
instead of two. btw, the diff is a torsen posi.

[otoh, if it turns out that the 3.08 is a regular 3-series gear and am
general does have two diffs for the hummer, that's good news - torsens
for everyone!]

the amc20 has a lot of gears --
2-series: 2.56, 2.73, and maybe the hummer 3.08
3-series: 2.87, 3.07, 3.15, 3.31, 3.54, 3.73, etc...

also btw if you don't want a torsen the jeep aftermkt has loads of
other posis for the amc20. just ask randy's ring and pinion...
