Catalytic converters were first installed in AMC cars for the 1975 model year -- all California cars, all V-8 equipped cars, and all Matador/Ambo with six and manual trans. Interestingly, all 49 state 4V V-8 cars had dual exhaust and dual cats, 2V V-8s had single exhaust/cat. No single exhaust 4V V-8s! All California V-8 cars are stated to use "two converters", so I assume that means all were dual exhaust (or did they run back into a single tail pipe?). Okay, that's not the question! Eddie Stakes sent me a photo of his 81 Eagle door tag for comparison to others. Included in the photo is a sticker just above the door tag stating that a catalytic converter is used. It reads: VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION THIS VEHICLE CONFORMS TO USEPA REGULATIONS APPLICABLE TO 1981 MODEL YEAR NEW MOTOR VEHICLES CATALYST The question is when did AMC start using this sticker? Was it on every vehicle equipped with a catalytic converter? Who has a 75 that hasn't been repainted and the sticker removed or painted over? If anyone needs to see a photo for placement or recognition (maybe the sticker has been painted over, but you can tell it's there), let me know and I'll forward or post on a site where it can be viewed. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Independent Magazine" (AIM) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AIM.html (free download available!)
