Re: Two Piece Front Hub/Drum Assembly

I just took a look at my parts book and there are some cases where the same drum used on one model for the front is used on the rear of another but there's also the fact that both Bendix and Wagner sold brake parts to other manufacturers (Ford, Volvo, Studebaker, and International, among others) so separate hubs would let them use the same drum for different makes. Also, I would think that it would be far easier to do the casting and machine work on individual parts than it would be one big assembly.

Rotors, on the other hand, are a different story. Both one and two piece assemblies have been common for most of the time they were around with two piece being more common now since most vehicles are front wheel drive.

So it looks like all six cylinder drum brakes were two piece. Anyone taken a late V-8 drum/hub apart? I never paid attention to drums that much before -- the only new ones I ever bought came with a hub, and I don't even recall what make/model/year the car was! Matt is likely right -- all are two piece units. I'd just like some confirmation before I put that in print somewhere. Seems like it might be cheaper to make them in one piece, but then making them two piece means the drums could be used front or rear with possibly a little machine work -- center hole might be different sizes.

Replacements are just the drum. The hub is removed by pressing out the
wheel studs from the old drum assembly. Kennedy American's catalog (I know,
hardly authoritative) lists two 9" six cylinder front drums:58-72 and 73-76
(I'm going to guess 76 was the last year for front drums). I know that the
10" front drums on my former Rebel were also two piece and I would assume
that they were also two piece for all years they were offered. I've always
been under the impression that one piece front drums were the exception on
US cars.
