You should be able to pull the engine and leave the trans alone. Pull radiator out of the way, and if you can get to the upper bell housing bolts, just pull the bell bolts, slide engine forward six inches, then lift out. You might need to take the water pump off. Scratch that... DO take the water pump off! It's easy enough to get to, and will catch on everything. Besides, you don't want to use an old water pump -- the seal dries out and won't last long. If you need to use it for a short period, soak it at least over night in a bucket of water to rejuvenate the seal first. That's worked for me! If you have to slide the trans back you'll have to support the car and slide the axle and torque tube back also. Removing the water pump and radiator for clearance is a lot easier! For installing, if this is a stick shift car, I'd pull the trans under the car first. The T-96 is relatively light. Install clutch, bell, and trans out of the car, then pull trans to put back in car. Sounds like a lot of work, and it will take you an hour longer, but work will actually be lessened, and whole experience will be less stressful. The long engine/trans combo with a straight six is a lot more difficult to manuever in the engine bay than a much shorter V-8. The auto trans is a bit different. It's hard to get to the top bell bolts on the back of the engine, so you have to bite the ease part and install in one piece. NEVER try to pry the torque tube back! It won't go far enough to slip off the trans due to brake lines and panhard rod. Prying on a Rambler just ends up bending/breaking things. Old Chevy mechanics will say it can be pried back becasue they used to do that on 40s/early 50s Chevys with torque tubes -- but they used LEAF SPRINGS. No panhard rod, and you were basically flattening out the front part of the springs when prying back -- nothing that wouldn't return to shape. I checked the TSM and it is only a paragraph and not a lot of information. As always any help is appreciated. > > ============================================================= Posted by wixList Archiver -- http://www.amxfiles.com/wixlist
