Matt, I don't have any suggestions, but I do have one caution. If the material has anything which appears to be fibrous in it, it could be asbestos. On my 66 Rambler I didn't need to remove it (yet, but there's bodywork in its future) so I just removed what was loose and had fallen down in the cracks.
