1. The air compressor is indeed for the rear air shocks. There's a load level sensor in the back that will keep the car level when loaded when the switch is in auto. Check the air hoses and shock condition if the compressor runs a lot. Switching to accessory should cut air flow to the shocks and allow pumping up tires, beach balls, etc. I'm assuming it's an electric solenoid valve, so you may want to check that out before using. If the compressor is bad go get a small cigarette lighter plug compressor. You'll have to use an adapter or two to plumb it in and make a mounting bracket, but it's cheap and easy enough. I'm willing to bet the car has the factory tow package. Most with the leveling system do. 2. Matt answered the exhaust leak question. The only thing I can add is that mid 1980 and later manifolds don't bolt together, they are two separate pieces. They do share most mounting bolts though, so it's hard to remove one without the other. I don't recall if these later AMCs used an exhaust manifold gasket or not. 3. For an idea on how hard the heater core will be to remove, check http://www.tocmp.com/manuals/AMC/1973/Service/Chapter12Ahtml/browser.htm The AC service section isn't there, but the Command Air housing is similar. Removal of the heater core is about the same, though the housing under the dash is a bit bigger to house the evaporator. The evaporator is between the fan and vents (heated air blows through it). Just don't take any hoses loose! 4. Use the rubber gasket with NO sealant. Make sure all surfaces are clean, like with alcohol, mineral spirits, or paint thinner. Nail polish remover (unscented) works well also. I mention that because it's easy to get in small quantities -- no need to buy a quart! As Tom mentioned, a warped cover will leak no matter what. Either get a new plastic one or a metal one. There are stamped steel and cast aluminum models. Aluminum costs more, but is very resistant to warping. Stamped steel will warp if not tightened correctly, though not as easily as the plastic. Use what your budget allows. > >And more on the 1984 Eagle. I went and looked at it today.
