Not to make excuses for them, but the manu's are using hybrid tech
to improve performance, not to squeeze mileage. They claim that's
what sells (probably does).

But we'll see how they perform when platforms are tuned the other
way.

It was mentioned on this list before (we're in deep OT here, I
guess I'm making it worse) that for REALLY short trips, why not
use hybrids as pure elelectrics, and charge 'em from the wall when
you get home from you 10 mile round trip shopping spree? And save

the gas for the commute? This would work for me perfectly.
