It could simply be worn out, or a good culprit would likely be a poorly functioning/nonfunctioning PCV system. $1500 for a running/driving one of these wouldn't be too out of line, even if the engine needs a bit o' work. As a side note, there's a guy about a mile or two from where I live who has a 91 Cherokee Sport 2dr/2wd/4.0/5speed for sale for $795. What he has written on the windshield indicates that it needs either a complete engine or some engine work. I certainly don't need it, though. I have a freshly built 4.0 sitting on the engine stand waiting for the Spirit installation, and while I still need to round up a 2wd AW4 tranny for it, I can get that easily enough from the local Pull A Part... The body looks OK with a small ding in the back quarterpanel, and rust bubbles on the roof drip rail on the starboard side. It drives and stops really well, engine sound good, doesn't seem to smoke, and the AC is cold. It has ~167K miles But, something scares me about this thing; I pulled the dipstick and the oil looked like brown goo, and the engine has oil all over the valve cover and intake that seems to be coming from either the fill cap or the PCV valve. This tells me blow-back, although as mentioned above, I didn't notice the engine smoking through the tailpipe when I asked him to park it (it was next to a new Volvo). HMMM, what to do? I'll make a decision by tomorrow. I figured that this is cheap enough, and could use it as a SUV as needed until I'm ready, then transplant the entire assy into the wagon when I get that far. The oil/apparent blowback puzzles me due to the lack of smoke. I guess it's possible that I could flush the engine and put in good oil/synthetic, but that won't fix problems already there. No "overhaul in a can" as such that I know, but it might be simple enough to flush, replace the PCV, tune, etc, and it's OK. Oh, yeah, I may need to hide it from Mama for a month or two...
