Pull the small tube from the valve cover to intake (what would be the PCV line, but no valve) and throw it away. Go to the nearest Jeep dealer and get another. That will solve at least 50% of the problem. That little 1/8" (maybe 3/16") tube gets clogged over the years. Then pull the valve cover. Flip it over and you'll see a baffle or two screwed into the top. Remove and clean really good. They regulate air flow inside the engine. This is a common "problem" with these engines. It's really just a maintenance issue, not a big problem. Some engine flush would be good after that. Should be good for another 40K or so. For $1500 and it's running good, trans works fine, etc., you have a great rebuilder anyway. All the parts work, so that means after a rebuild it should be good to go -- no bug chasing. Plus you have all the parts you'd need! The guy is willing to sell cheap becasue the oil blowback is scaring him too!! The body looks OK with a small ding in the back quarterpanel, and rust bubbles on the roof drip rail on the starboard side. It drives and stops really well, engine sound good, doesn't seem to smoke, and the AC is cold. It has ~167K miles > > But, something scares me about this thing; I pulled the dipstick and the oil looked like brown goo, and the engine has oil all over the valve cover and intake that seems to be coming from either the fill cap or the PCV valve. This tells me blow-back, although as mentioned above, I didn't notice the engine smoking through the tailpipe when I asked him to park it (it was next to a new Volvo). > > HMMM, what to do? I'll make a decision by tomorrow. I figured that this is cheap enough, and could use it as a SUV as needed until I'm ready, then transplant the entire assy into the wagon when I get that far. > > The oil/apparent blowback puzzles me due to the lack of smoke. I guess it's possible that I could flush the engine and put in good oil/synthetic, but that won't fix problems already there. No "overhaul in a can" as such that I know, but it might be simple enough to flush, replace the PCV, tune, etc, and it's OK. > > Oh, yeah, I may need to hide it from Mama for a month or two... > > Jim Boone > Mims, FL > > ============================================================= > Posted by wixList Archiver -- http://www.amxfiles.com/wixlist ============================================================= Posted by wixList Archiver -- http://www.amxfiles.com/wixlist
