Re: 4.0 Jeep

Sounds like moisture. Could be from too many short trips not cooking the condesation out of the oil. If it's not foamy you may be O.K. with a flush. Also the oil control rigns tend to stick and gum up on these if th eoil isn't changed on a regular basis.
If it does not smoke or show other signs of abuse. I'd get a good flush and run it through the engine to break up the goo and change the oil once or twice. Then proceed from there.
The blowby tends to increase as milage goes up on these. They are usually good for 200,000+ easy.

>I found a '94 Cherokee locally with a 4.0/5 sp/2WD; I can probably get this thing for less than $1500. The body looks OK with a small ding in the back quarterpanel, and rust bubbles on the roof drip rail on the starboard side. It drives and stops really well, engine sound good, doesn't seem to smoke, and the AC is cold. It has ~167K miles

>But, something scares me about this thing; I pulled the dipstick and the oil looked like brown goo, and the engine has oil all over the valve cover and intake that seems to be coming from either the fill cap or the PCV valve. This tells me blow-back, although as mentioned above, I didn't notice the engine smoking through the tailpipe when I asked him to park it (it was next to a new Volvo).

>HMMM, what to do? I'll make a decision by tomorrow. I figured that this is cheap enough, and could use it as a SUV as needed until I'm ready, then transplant the entire assy into the wagon when I get that far.
>
>The oil/apparent blowback puzzles me due to the lack of smoke. I guess it's possible that I could flush the engine and put in good oil/synthetic, but that won't fix problems already there. No "overhaul in a can" as such that I know, but it might be simple enough to flush, replace the PCV, tune, etc, and it's OK.
