I'd suggest looking for a 360 or even 304 instead of a 401. Since the car is being adapted to the EFI in the Ford, adapt the EFI to the AMC engine when done. Is the 89 Ford a TBI system or MPI (injector for each cylinder)? Neither will be to hard to adapt, though MPI will need a manifold. If he's waiting to "find a deal on a 401" forget it --that Ford engine is there to stay! I'd highly encourage a 304/360 for a later transplant. I've done the same thing John -- assisted so they don't totally ruin the car, but encouraged AMC power. I did that with Brian Anderson and look where that 64 Classic went (one of the top 10 street/strip cars in Hot Rod -- but with a turbo 350 SBC instead of orignal 327 or AMC 360 -- it would have done at least as well with a 360, likely better!).
