My 68 which has a 232 and a manual transmission gets about 25-26 on the
highway and a little under 20 around town. I haven't been able to drive the
wagon around enough to find out what it gets (it has a 199 and an
automatic) but I think the last time it was on highway for a long trip it
got around 16. I don't know if the heat riser valve was working right at
that time or not.
Speaking of the heat riser valve, you may want to check your to see if it's
working. If it's not, it may be stuck closed (or partially closed) and it
will kill your gas mileage. If you can't move it by hand, it's worth
investigating (you'll need to drop the head pipe or remove the manifolds to
see what's going on). If it's stuck, you can have it cut out and install
pipe plugs where it goes through the exhaust manifold. I did that on my 68
and I don't have any cold driveability problems with it. I also put an
electronic ignition on it at the same time and I picked up 5 mpg between
these two changes.

whats your average miles per gallon achieved with your 199 or 232 I6? I
haven't been driving mine long..and I drive it a little hard but the MPG
seems too low and I'd like to compare. I think I'm getting about
12mpg..that included a 15mile road race with a 74 cutlass so normally prob
about 13-14mpg. thanks
