Fw: 199 MPG average?

My dad bought a new 1962 Classic Wagon with a 196, manual trans and no air or power steering when I was about nine years old. We made many trips from Louisiana to Florida and two trips to California over the next six years. I know very well how much mileage it got because I usually kept up with the figures as well as the road map. It always got 26-27 mpg on the highway with peaks of 28. There was no overdrive and Dad usually drove about 65-70 mph.
He bought a new 1968 American with the 199 engine and automatic with no air or power steering. It always got about 25 mpg on the highway until years later when it had well over 100,000 miles on it and I drove it as my car. In 1976 it was rear ended really bad. I had to drive it for a few weeks until I got another '62 Classic going that I had bought. The gas tank in the American was squashed into the floor pan and the gas line was pressed shut. I had to drive it to work every day with a one gallon tank under the hood. The car had about 130,000 miles on it at the time. I would stop by the road and refill my one gallon jug under the hood every 22 miles from a five gallon can in the car. I always had a little gas left in the jug at 22 miles.
I hope this helps. I do not exaggerate mpg or e.t.s.
Your AMC friend,
Gary Walker
P.S. The OTHER 62 Classic that I had never got so good, but then again, I hopped it up and it would run well over 100 mph with the 196.
