He probably meant 71, but the Sportabout might not have come out until 72. You have to admit, the Sportabout is one of the more attractive wagons ever made. Anyway, it could have high mileage, just figured he couldn't get much for it, or thought about selling and just never got around to it. It's hard to sell someting not running or with known problems, though an alternator sure wouldn't slow my buying down. Or, as you seem to suspect, there may be more than just a bad alternator. Go back to high mileage -- burning a little oil, low on power, front suspension about shot, etc. It will be a Motorola alternator, could easily be changed to a cheap GM. If it's solid and the engine isn't locked up or holed somewhere you might get a good deal at $200-$500. Check the floors and wheel wells, especially under the front fenders, for rust. If it's an auto trans and has sat that long it needs at least a fluid change BEFORE you run it, and I'd get a power flush done if it shifts properly after that fluid change. That will loosen and flush anything that might come loose and clog while driving. If it's a "three on the tree" the only worry you have is clutch and throw-out bearing, which is easier to deal with than a BW auto refresh. Might be something you can make a few bucks on after freshening up. But if you have a place to park them, can you have to many AMCs? I'd have 5-6 more if I weren't USAF and had to worry about moving around! On July 21, 2005 jamie smith wrote: > I went to a customers house today and he has a green AMC Hornet Sportabout Wagon. He said he only parked it because the alternator went out but I wonder why someone would quit driving a vehicle over something that simple. It looks like it has been sitting a while. Has at least one flat tire and one inflated. The 2 I saw are badly weathered. When I go back to his house (probably in about a week) I am going to see if he wants to sell it. If I end up with this car is there anything I should know about it? Am I crazy for wanting ANOTHER AMC?
