Whether you have to plug the triangular holes or not depends on the year of the block, core shift in the head, and how the head is mounted. The holes will be close to the side of the block unless you have a 1987-90 258 block (uses the same outer mold as the 4.0L, is at least 1/8" wider than older six blocks). The head is located by the head bolts and there is a little play -- you MIGHT get by shoving the head over before the bolts are tightened, but we're only talking a few thousandths of an inch. If the engine is run hot and pressure builds in the radiator it's likely to leak. The safe thing to do is plug the holes. If you're not comfortable drilling them out then stuff toilet paper or water soluble packing peanuts in the holes and cover with J.B. Weld at least 1/16" deep. Then was the TP/peanuts out after 24 hours. On July 8, 2005 mail@xxxxxxxxxxxx wrote: > The guy I got the engine from is a Jeep freak and they > did that to his buddies CJ.
