A better/easier idea for a driver using that American would be a Jeep 2.5L four and five speed. They used a 4.11 rear gear though. A 1980 Spirit 2.5L/4spd combo used a 3.08 axle, but I doubt that would give good performance. The American should perform just a bit better than a Cherokee -- my 63 Classic is about the equivalent in weight and frontal area nad performs about like a Cherokee does. So you should be able to get great performance with a 4.11 axle, and should be able to use a 3.73 or something similar and still get good performance and a bit better mileage. The American might work with a 3.08, but I'd go lower. To high a ratio will have negative results on mileage and performance.
