A: You don't have to limit yourself to just 258s. Any '72 up AMC 6 will work, including a 4.0L and it's not hard to graft the carb intake to the EFI head. In fact, while you have the motor out, you could retrofit the hole for the crank sensor into the bellhousing (I can give you the measurements off the 999 auto case I have from a 2000 Wrangler 4.0L) and replace the flexplate with one from the TJ to get you part way towards high output EFI. Bad thing is you would probably have to use the TJ starter as well. The tooth count may be the same, but I think the offset may be different. The torque converter is still the same as far as I can tell. (I don't have a flexplate yet or I'd mock one up) You could also add the Renix exhaust manifold for a bolt in header as it still has the port for the EGR valve (Jeepers in CA siamese the EGR pipes from carb/Renix to keep CARB legal) Just a thought, unless this will be concours? From: JOE FULTON <piper_pa20@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Maybe Need a 258 To: mail@xxxxxxxxxxxx I picked up another Gremlin today. 77 Gremlin X, nice body, and it's sunshine orange (Paint code 7Z?). It has a 258 2 bbl engine which may be ruined. Does anyone have a 258 which is reliable that they would part with? I'm only interested in an engine within driving distance of central CA.
