Got the head off. Quite an ordeal -- the valve cover -- that I had to modify for clearance -- didn't clear any more (since installing the trans mount).
Anyways, the head bolts had a dozen ft/lbs. There was no headgasket. That might have something to do with all the leakage.
Soaked up all the water, turned it slowly and dry a few times to pick up most of the water trapped between piston and cylinder above the top ring. Then some Marvel Mystery oil on a rag to put a thin film (didn't want to pour and trap water).
One vertical rust stain on #6, you could feel it, carefully steel wooled it off. A number of small spots but could not feel most of them. Seems OK.
No ridge, some soot on the piston tops/cyl above top ring, came off with Mystery oil on a rag.
Pistons are .030" over, marked L3103F. Look forged to me, if so that's as I was told anyways. Dished, I'll photo and measure later, I'll try to calc compression.
Head is fine, just wet. No signs of funny business anywhere, looks simply like someone pulled or swapped the head, installed the bolts for safekeeping, and ias it got passed around information got lost (eg it's not running, needs assembly). Hell of a way to find out!
