Re: OMG, not ANOTHER one?!

Joe, that only works on 232 powered Americans. 64 and 65 models with the 196 or 199 still used the "big nut" driveshaft. The pinion shaft on the axle is splined and the U-joint yoke comes off. The yoke is splined to match the pinion shaft and has a big nut that circles the end of the yoke. The splines this nut screws on ar tapered -- as you tighten the nut the splines (the yoke has four narrow slots -- about the width of a hack saw blade kerf) tighten on the pinion shaft. That nut has to be tightened to something like 150-200 lb/ft, no easy task! The best thing is to not take it off, but disassemble the u-joint under the car. Take the caps out of the yoke on the pinion shaft. Weight HAS to be on the rear wheels! when the rear wheels are off the ground the springs swing the axle forward just enough to make it impossible to get the driveshaft out. Stands under the axle are usually enough. You need the room to work and the wheels off the ground so you can rotate the shaft anywa!
