Re: Jeep trans adapters

A: Funny this should come up now, but I am looking to adapt a 42RE from a
'94 up Grand Cherokee 4.0L 4x4 to my J4000 (if I can find a reasonable
priced core). Plan is to retrofit a Mopar 4 speed auto hydraulic valvebody
in place of the computer controlled one and hook up to a Chev NP208 Tcase
(With Jeep internals and non-slipyoke output shaft) This will give me O/D
and since I have a 304 998 flexplate, the front should line up fine (I'll
compare the offset with one from the 4.0L if available)
Driveshafts will be a bit of an issue to deal with, but I figure the
trans corssbar and FSJ trans mount will work (may have to move it back
slightly) and I need to change the front axle anyways. (5 lug front and 8
lug rear currently) I plan to either make this into a functional tow rig
(tilt bed with winch and stinger for hauling a second car) I may transplant
all this stuff to the M715 I hope to bring home soon. (It has a 10 foot bed)

Mark, there's a guy on the Hot Rodders forum (www.hotrodders.com) who
converted a Borg Warner OD unit to a remote mount. He's using it in a truck.
You might consider something like that. The GV unit is a HD version of the
Laycock-DeNormanville unit that AMC used in the 70s. In fact, GV got their
start by buying leftover stock from AMC and then making their own adapters
and remote mount kits. They started making parts because of the high cost to
ship from England, and they wanted to beef it up a bit for the really big
engines.
